As September whines down, I can only say; what another fun and busy month. It started out with the Santa Barbra City Race and Tequila Derby. Unfortunately the race up had more wind than Out Patient apparently wanted, we broke a block on the outhaul and after we replaced it, we pulled the block attach point out of the boom. It really was a learning lesson and goes to show how a flat sail can point much better compared to an improperly trimmed one can. Once we could not flatten the lower sail with an outhaul we lost all our pointing ability and added more heal to the boat than was necessary. When we got to Santa Barbra we were able to buy a new block and attach it with a hose clamp and get the boat home. The next weekend was the Prison Break put on by Ventura Sailing Club. As much as I like this race, unfortunately I could not make it this year. Hopefully someone else did and has a report for everyone. Then the big weekend was put on by Ventura Yacht club, the one everyone gets prepared for all year long hoping to bring the silver back to Anacapa Yacht Club. The Ventura Cup and the Santa Barbra Channel Challenge. We were able to put together two teams this year and we finished 2nd and 5th out of 9 teams. It was a good weekend considering who we raced against. XS and Maine Squeeze raced against Doctor Laura's Katana, a 47 ft Kernin built for pure speed. Coyote raced against Deke and his Olson 30, Angry Hillbillies II in the B class which is a hard earned win on any day. Then in C class; Rambunctious was sailing against Pangea, which is always a hard boat to beat, but Mike & Donna placed well. In the Non Spin class, Out Patient and Zuma Jay raced against both Valero and Taxi Dancer. Both boats come from each end of the rating scale. Valero a higher rated boat is use to sailing in it’s own air and Taxi Dancer and Rachel Pugh 68 with a -69 for a rating is use to racing against professional teams. Talking about a intense weekend, we did very good. I would also like to thank Superluminal for coming out and racing.

I have to also mention, we were left with a lot of crew that were no shows at the last minute. So we were moving crew around to fill vacancies. Everyone knows as racers, we can’t race without crew. And when you have a boat that takes 10 people to sail, you want someone who has been on the boat and knows their position. So I have to mention, thank you for the crews that did show up and were willing to move form boat to boat to keep us competitive, I hope it was just as much fun for them.

As the month continued on, Out Patient sailed in Channel Islands Yacht Club Lady at the Helm and once again, Trish went home with a trophy and plus a new sail bag for all her gear. The month ended with Trish and I going to Catalina Island for the Commodores Cruise. As much as we wanted to take Out Patient, we opted for the Catalina Express. The weekend catered to Commodores from the Southern California Yacht Assoc. We got to go to the elusive Catalina Yacht Club. Since they are in such a high visited area, they don’t honor reciprocal privileges. It might have been our only opportunity time to go inside. It turned out to be a small but fun event. We played games against other clubs and got to meet officers from the San Diego area, as well as Long Beach and San Pedro. It is always a treat to be asked by our southern clubs, how we can sail in our waters, they see it as very rough and windy up here and don’t make the journey often. I told them, you just don’t show up on the race course with a light air number 1 and a .5 oz chute for the weekend. We like the challenges of our waters. I was even asked how many races a year we post pone, and proudly let them know, if our committee boat can go out and anchor, we have racers that go out and sail.

I have to close with, our Wet Wednesdays are over. A lot of us are not going to know what to do, but we will be ready for May and another season.

Thank you all for what you do,

Randy and Trish

Vice Commodores Report: BILL BRAYTON

We started off the month with the Santa Barbara City Race/Tequila Derby Weekend. We were originally signed on to go as a back up boat to Doug & Kalin Dodge's Moonshadow so we could learn the ropes from these experienced host boat folks. Due to work complications the Dodges were unable to make the weekend so Our Porpoise was now the host boat. I cannot thank the Dodges enough for their advice leading up to the weekend.

Both Tina and I felt a huge responsibility to have the welcoming dock party be awesome for the racers. Both of us, being racers, we can appreciate a well prepared dock party after a grueling day of hard racing. Our Porpoise left the dock at 0700 on Saturday morning to get to Santa BarbaraHarbor by noon. It was a bit lumpy heading out Pierpont bay and about half way there things flattened out nicely. Joe & Joanne Underwood aboard Huba Huba had arranged to meet us in Santa Barbara after spending the night in PelicanBay on Santa Cruz. We talked on the radio as we got closer and they timed there crossing perfectly to get to Santa Barbara just minutes before we did.

After tying Our Porpoise and Huba Huba to the guest dock it was time to check in with yacht club and harbor patrol. We had recently been to the harbor so we knew the ropes. Santa Barbara Yacht Club is always accommodating and the first nights stay is always free to reciprocal clubs. We went to the arbor patrol office to get our dock keys reactivated for the weekend. Joe & Joanne had to purchase their gate key for 25 dollars. You keep your key and have it activated for free each time you return to the harbor for a stay.

After all the official stuff was done we were ready to prepare the dock party for the racers arrival. Pete and Gloria Cassamassima arrived with all the supplies not long after we had got checked. Pete and Gloria have been helping out with this event for many years and this year was no exception. Pete drove his truck up chock o block full of party supplies from the clubhouse and we got it down to the dock in short order. Thanks Pete! While we set up the dock Tina was down in the boat cooking all the finger foods for the racers. Now this is easier said then done with a small boat oven. Pan after pan of little burritos and taquitos came out that oven for most of the afternoon. Everything is ready now all we need is racers!

Joe, Joanne, Pete and Gloria had made there way up to the SBYC patio to await the racers. It was not long before Joanne returned to the dock to inform us that the first of the racers were arriving. Finally, Party on!

The boats started to trickle in one after another until we had the guest dock full of racers. We had two boats side tied to Our Porpoise and Huba Huba had two boats side tied to them for a total of six boats on the guest dock. We did not have enough room for two more boats and the harbor patrol got those slips very close to the end dock. The racers enjoyed all the prepared finger foods and margaritas provided until pretty late in the evening. Many of the racers took for the local watering hole while Tina and I settled in after a long day to watch a movie that we had traded with the Underwoods.

Sunday is a layover day for the racers to enjoy all that Santa Barbara has to offer. Some of us enjoyed the reasonably priced buffet at SBYC while others opted for breakfast elsewhere. After breakfast was finished, racers spread out all over Santa Barbara. Some took the walk up to State Street while others ventured down to the art walk along Cabrillo Blvd. Tina and I chose to walk to StearnsWharf for a stroll along the pier and an ice cream. Weather wise it was a beautiful day for all activities. Later that day we informed everyone that we saw that there would be cocktails on the dock at sunset. We had plenty of leftovers and more margaritas that we certainly did not want to take home. We had a great crowd for sundowners and before too long all the food and drink disappeared.

Monday morning turned out to be clear and bright. The racers gathered on the patio of SBYC for the slippers meeting. I was in charge of the meeting and all went well. We decided to eliminate the weather mark of the race because there wasn't much wind and the racers wanted to get down the course in a timely manner. The race started at 1100 in very light breeze and the spin and non spin classes got away cleanly. Tina and I went down to Our Porpoise and cleared out of the guest dock in short order to head out and check on the racers progress.

What progress? We cleared the harbor entrance to find the racers ghosting along at about 1 knot in light air. After taking a count to be sure they were all there we kicked up the rpms on the iron genoa and pointed towards Channel islandsHarbor. We past the front runners and waved so long as we sped past at a brisk 7 knots. Except for seeing one spout from a solitary whale on the way home the passage was pretty uneventful. The wind had built in behind us and the racers did enjoy a fine day in the water for the return trip. Look for the official results of the weekend’s races elsewhere in this newsletter.

The OD's for our Wet Weds and Friday night dinners have been awesome! Due to the SB City Race/Tequila derby weekend we had three Friday night meetings. One of these was the meatloaf cook off in the AYC kitchen stadium. The challenge was on between me and Cherri Taylor. This was a well attended event and those attended were treated to a great meal of two different styles of meatloaf. The next and last Friday evening my lovely wife Tina made an awesome parmesan crusted chicken breast with baked veggies and rice. Totally awesome dinner! The other Friday was a potluck.

Cruising News: Joe Underwood

Ahoy Cruisers,

This year has been outstanding; we have had the opportunity to cruise to many of the anchorages at Santa Cruz Island. Everyone that has participated has seen first hand the natural wonders that the island holds, from the sand beaches at Coche’s to the rugged out cropping and caves of Cauvea Valdez. The one thing that really stands out in my mind is the night sky with the abundance of stars and the Milky Way; we have even been lucky enough to see a satellite fly by. This last cruise was to the beautiful Coche’s, we had Don and Bobby Lehman on Sea Dancer and Crosby and Laura Swartz on Puff On join us. We all had a wonderful time enjoying the tranquil setting and having a good time with our group social aboard Huba Huba. The Lehman’s invited us all back to there boat, Sea Dancer, after the social for dinner and the party continued, they even surprised us by breaking out a bottle of Champaign, as Joanne and I were celebrating our tenth Wedding Anniversary. What a great time with great friends. The next morning Joanne and I renewed our vow’s to each other on the bow of Huba Huba, a time that we will always remember. Sea Dancer and Puff On headed home. Joanne and I wanted to stay out at the island so we left Coche’s and headed to the front side and spent the night at Little Scorpion anchorage before heading home. What a great cruise, we all had fun and enjoyed the moment.

Our next adventure is coming up on October 15th and 16th. Our cruising calendar has us scheduled to go out to Coche’s but we are changing this destination to Pelican Cove on the front side of the island (I will be sending out more information on this cruise in a separate email). On this cruise we will be meeting up with some of our friends from Ventura Sailing Club and H Dock. This will be our last scheduled cruise of 2011 and it is shaping up to be quite a party with 7 boats already making plans to join, so don’t miss this one as there will surely be some memorable times out on the water.

For more information on cruising, please contact me by email or phone.

SAILTIEMECHANNELISLANDS

SailTime Channel Islands began operation in 2004 as a sailing club in the Channel IslandsHarbor. It is part of the international franchise that offers sailing opportunities throughout North America, the UK, Europe and Australia.

The organization is celebrating its 10th Anniversary this year having begun operations in 2001. Unique to the sailing club community, SailTime offers flat rate monthly sailing for members that rivals boat ownership for the lifestyle we all are seeking. The organization also believes that owning a boat in the program is the "intelligent alternative" to traditional boat ownership.

The local business here was begun by Chris and his son Colin Tucker. Since 2005, STCI has been a sponsor and member of Anacapa Yacht Club. For several years, Chris headed up the bar on Wet Wednesdays. On August 1st of this year, The Tuckers sold the business to Nicole and Jon Trautman who are looking forward to building on what has been done already. They hope to add several new Hunter sailboats and a Gemini catamaran or two in the next couple of years. They also wish to expand into the VenturaHarbor when the market permits and continue the support of AYC.

Two Anacapa Yacht Club Members own boats in the SailTime Channel Islands fleet; Jerry Roth has his Hunter 33, Rainbow, in the program, as does S.K. Leong and his Hunter 36, 1421, which races in many of the series as well as Wet Wednesday with the boat.
