UK Contingent - Communications Team
Applicant Information Pack
This application pack is designed to provide information about communication team roles. Further information about the Jamboree itself can be found online at

Introduction

This document should be read in conjunction with the Applicant Information Pack for Contingent Support Team members. That document provides background information to the 24th World Scout Jamboree and the UK Contingent, including the role of the communications team within the UK Contingent Structure and sets out the application process. .

UK Contingent Communications Team

The UK Contingent communications team is a part of the Contingent Support Team (CST) and is responsible for delivering accurate, timely, inspiring and relevant information about the Jamboree to UK Contingent members, Scouting and Guiding in the UK and a wide range of external audiences.

Individual members of the UK Contingent communications team will be responsible for leading and delivering specific aspects of the UK Contingent communications programme, with support from the UKHQ communications teams and other Contingent Members.

Given the specialist skills required for some of the roles, it is not considered necessary for all members of the communications team to be part of the wider CST, or will the individuals be required to attend the Jamboree.

This document provides further information and sets out the application process for the recruitment of these additional communication team roles. By applying for these additional roles, you are not excluded from also applying for the general other CST work areas.

The communications team is set out into three sub teams which include both CST and non-CST roles.

Digital Communications:

oSocial Media (CST role): The UK Contingent wants to provide exciting and relevant information to all members of the Contingent through its social media platforms. The role will be responsible for planning, delivering content and managing UK Contingent communications across UK Contingent social media platforms to ensure we will deliver 21st century communications.

oWebsiteEditor (not a CST role): The vision for the UK Contingent website (ukcontingent.co.uk) is that it should be one of the primary tools for keeping all members of the UK Contingent up to date and can be a source of all relevant information for their role and to answer possible queries. The role will be responsible for managing, developing and improving the existing website including responsibility for managing and updating the content on the website.

Design and Editing Team

oGraphic Designer (not a CST role): The role will be responsible for managing the UK Contingent visual identity to deliver fantastic on brand communications, promotional materials and equipment.

oCopywriter / Editor (not a CST role): The role will be responsible for providing the “voice” of the UK Contingent and that all formal communications are in the Contingent’s tone and meets our brand values. They will be responsible for the final proofreading and editing of all UK Contingent communications, so an eye for detail is essential.

●Listening Team

oEngagement (CST role): Part of the UK Contingent’s Vision is to provide “unique international adventure shaped by young people”. To ensure that the vision is shaped by young people, this role will be responsible for ensuring engagement communications with young people and adults alike in the Contingent. Part of the role may be to support the organisation of events and forums for young people of the Contingent. A creative approach to problems and experience of how best to communicate with young people are considered essential skills for the role. The role will be jointly supported by the CMT for Communications and Youth Engagement.

oCommunications Support (CST role): To develop and support a network of Assistant Unit Leaders with specific responsibility for communications (“Communications Champions”), planning and delivering specialist training and as well as sharing best practice and ensuring a link between Units and existing local communication structures to ensure “on-brand” local PR coverage and providing information to local Scouting. The role will work closely with UKHQ Teams and be responsible for maintaining links across the UK Contingent Team and development of training of communications skills for young people.

It is likely that a number of stand alone projects will be undertaken by the communications team, including the delivery of the Join-in-Jamboree project. Expressions of interest to be part of delivery of such projects should be included on your application form including any relevant communication skills or experience.

Notes about Non CST Roles

Applicants for the non CST roles will not have to attend the World Scout Jamboree as part of their role, nor will they be asked to provide broader support to members of the contingent (Units or members of the International Support Team (IST).

As these roles will not be attending the Jamboree, they will not have to pay the Jamboree fee, as discussed with “Practical Points” Applicant Information Pack for Contingent Support Team members. As mentioned, if you would like to attend the event as a member of IST you will need to apply and go through IST selection at a later date as this is a separate role.

Whilst attendance may be required at some contingent events (e.g. Unit Leader Weekends), it is unlikely that attendance would be required a Contingent Support Team events. Attendance may be required at Communication Team meetings.

The roles are an appointment to the UK Contingent and expenses incurred in undertaking the role will be reimbursed as agreed by the Contingent Leader and staff member responsible for the event budget.

The roles will be recruited in a process parallel to the CST application process, but attendance will not be required at the CST Selection Event scheduled to take place on 11th-12th March. Application forms should be returned by 3rd February 2017, though early applications are encouraged. Following shortlisting, applicants will be invited for interviews (via Skype) commencing during week beginning 6th February 2017, with appointments confirmed by early March 2017 (at the latest).

The remainder of this document sets out the role description and person specification for the non CST roles. A key element of the roles are an ability to meet tight deadlines and a flexible approach to respond quickly to requests. As such, job sharing and multiple appointments to each role will be considered.

The role descriptions set out below are indicative, and the team is likely to be shaped by those appointed to roles and their skill set and potential applicants are therefore encouraged to apply, even if they are not sure they have all the skills and experience specified.

Application Process

To apply you will need to complete the application form and Equal Opportunities Form and send it to . Alternative application methods may be appropriate, and will be accepted so long as they show how the applicant meets the skills, knowledge and experience e.g. portfolio of work etc.

Applications close at 12 noon on Friday 3rd February, with candidates contacted from week beginning the 6th February onwards.

All roles are subject to the receipt of a positive local endorsement.

If you have any questions or would like to talk to someone about any of these roles in more detail then please send your contact details to to arrange a discussion about the role with the CMT for Communications.
