UBC Creative Writing Program: Teaching Assistants for 2015-2016 Academic Year

The Creative Writing Program hopes to appoint part-time Teaching Assistants from among the MFA students in the Creative Writing Program to assist in the following courses:

CRWR 200: Introduction to Creative Writing (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 201: Introduction to Writing Poetry (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 203: Introduction to Writing for Children and Young Adults (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 205: Introduction to Writing Creative Non-Fiction (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 206: Introduction to Writing for the Screen (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 208: Introduction to Writing for Graphic Forms (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 209: Introduction to Writing Fiction (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 213: Introduction to Writing for New Media (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 230: Introduction for Writing for Comedic Forms (Term 1 & 2)

CRWR 301: Intermediate Writing Poetry (Term 2)

CRWR 303: Intermediate Writing for Children and Young Adults (Term 1)

CRWR 305: Intermediate Writing Creative Non-fiction (Term 2)

CRWR 306: Intermediate Writing for the Screen (Term 2)

CRWR 309: Intermediate Writing Fiction (Term 1 & 2)

You must be available for the entire duration of the course for which you apply.

Please note that this is a tentative listing and schedule and may change. These TA positions depend on Creative Writing Program budget approval.

Qualifications: At a minimum, the applicant will have an undergraduate degree or its equivalent with academic and/or professional experience as a writer. The applicant must have solid craft knowledge of the genre covered in the course for which they are applying.

What to Highlight in Your Application: Teaching experience or training is an asset. Students should be sure to mention any tutoring, mentoring, leadership or past TA experience they’ve had. Volunteer experience will be considered alongside work experience.

Duties: Marking student assignments and quizzes, answering student queries during office hours and via email, helping with in-class logistics, including, but not limited to: distributing handouts, running media, monitoring quizzes, and answering student questions. Some courses offer opportunities for TAs to teach. The 300 level courses involve leading workshops and discussions.

Hours of work: Most TA positions are half-time for a single term, 96 hours total.Please note that TA positions may vary by course.

Salary: Master’s Students: GTA II, $29.57/hour
