Twenty-Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Wis 2:12, 17-20 Jas 3:16---4:3 Mk 9;30-37 (134)

“Wisdom from above, by contrast, is first of all innocent. It is also peaceable, lenient, docile, rich in sympathy and the kindly deeds that are its fruit, impartial and sincere. The harvest of justice is sown in peace, for those who cultivate peace.” ‘Whoeverwelcomes a child such as this for my sake welcomes me. And whoever welcomes me welcomes not me, but him who sent me.’”

Did you ever notice the many lists or litanies we find in the scriptures? The hymn of charity of Paul in Corinthians might come to mind. Paul uses this technique constantly, as in the fruits of the Spirit in Galatians. Matthew employs this in the judgment scene including the do’s and don’ts in dealing with the least of His brethren. St. James today offers a similar methodology.

Recently, speaking with someone who stocks greeting cards for stores, I thought about the many categories and styles that are employed to make it easier for us to express ourselves. We find a card for birthdays and anniversaries, get well and sympathy cards, graduation and christenings, there is one for every occasion.

St. James describes wisdom in a similar way. It leads to Pope Paul VI’s teaching seen on bumper stickers ‘If you want peace, work for justice.’

Fr. Paul Murray OP (Professor of Spiritual Theology, University of St Thomas, Rome)

Father Paul Murray, an Irish Dominican Province, is an internationally known writer and lecturer on the spiritual life. The Fifteenth Century Dominican Artist, Fra Angelico, is noted for the brilliance of his artistic technique but the theological and religious foundation on which this work was based is rarely investigated. In his presentation Fr. Allan will show the influence on Fra Angelico of a profound faith in the Incarnation lived in the context of the poverty and simplicity of the life of a Preaching Friar.

“The harvest of justice is sown in peace by those who make peace.” (James 3:18)

Unfortunately, often, those who sow peace are seen like the righteous in today’s first reading: inconvenient and critical of common practices, to be insulted and abused, to be tested to see if God is truly with them. Jesus did say the peace He brings is not the peace of this world. This, our faith, is no easy faith. It calls us to be as humble as a child, nonviolent in the face of adversity, and, potentially, victim to the violence of those who would silence us for bearing the message of Christ. Are we up to the task? How badly do we really want peace? ~~Pax Christi Metro New York
