Low levels of attainment at KS2 pupils at a disadvantage on entry to KS3 and assumed prior knowledge and skills are lacking.
Low reading ages and a lack of reading culture among low attaining Y7 pupils on entry
C. / Negative experience of progress and attainment at KS2 may have built up an attitude of disaffection with learning and low self-esteem. This may also be present within the family setting.
D. / Lack of focussed support at home. This can lead to ineffective or incomplete homework and for pupils to be moving further behind their peers.

Yr7 Catch-up Pupils attainment in Maths and English is line with the end of Yr7 expectations as set out on the Yr7 Curriculum Flight paths. / End of Yr7 English and Maths data sets
Yr7 Catch-up pupils to read regularly and widely. / Library reading records / Accelerated Reading data show that Catch-up pupil reading has a variety of genre and that pupils are reading frequently. NfER Reading Age tests to show that by the end of Yr7 Catch-up pupils made faster progress than their peers and the gap in Reading Ages is narrowing.

  • KS2 curriculum gap analysis
  • Mirroring of the Maths curriculum to support in class skills needs
  • Maths homework support
  • White Rose teaching materials and testing.
Maths teacher the same as for the bottom set Yr7.
Positive setting – Small Maths room
Family Numeracy Group to be widened to include these parents / pupils.
RADY uplift applied and classes re-set accordingly.
CPD – to spend a day working alongside a Yr6 teacher in a Primary feeder school. / Small group work has a greater impact on pupil progress and positive peer relationships.
The curriculum is designed to complement and support in-class work so that every Maths lesson has greater impact for these pupils. By using the same Maths specialist for the Catch-up classes as for their regular timetabled Maths lesson it ensures that the work is tailored to precisely intervene where the individual needs are and to support the in-class curriculum and attainment.
The positive setting in the small Maths mentoring room and in lessons to engender a sense of achievement in Maths.
Supporting parents with the necessary skills and the opportunity to engage with numeracy with their daughter allows the learning momentum to continue at home. This creates a positive home / school relationship to build on.

1 additional Literacy lesson taught by the SENCO with TA support - Progress Units/targeted reading programmes for example Talisman/Toe by Toe/beat dyslexia and spelling, vocabulary and grammar support.

The curriculum is designed to complement and support in-class work so that every English lesson has greater impact for these pupils. This is supported by a rich literacy diet with an emphasis on skills and vocabulary.
The Accelerated Reader programme creates variety, a love of reading for pleasure and has inbuilt testing to measure progress.
The positive setting in the Library introduced these Catch-up pupils to a setting and access to support for all their subjects that they might not necessarily access alone.
Supporting parents with the right skills and the opportunity to engage with reading with their daughter maintains a momentum at home. This creates a positive home / school relationship to build on.
The rapid and sustained progress made via the different learning support programmes undertaken by the learning Support Team justifies the additional literacy lesson added to the curriculum for these pupils.
