FRENCH IN TCD

What we do and why we do it:

Over 180 million people now speak French in countries on all five continents. The French ‘Arts’ programme as part of TSM, in Trinity, is a challenging and demanding one, which provides students with a thorough grounding in French, and a wide knowledge of major aspects of French literature, culture, society and linguistics. The course aims not only to provide students with the specific skills to pursue a career in French-related areas, but also to develop transferable skills such as an analytical mind, an acute sense of critical inquiry, cultural awareness, communication skills and self-reliance which will equip students to think independently and to see the world in new ways, irrespective of how their career paths develop.

How we do it:

Language instruction is a vital element throughout the four years. Students progress beyond the basic skills of communication to a high level of proficiency in the core skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. Parallel courses on aspects of French and francophone culture open up key areas of literature, history, politics and linguistics, as well as set the language in the context from which it derives its vitality. From First to Fourth Year, students have increasing access to optional courses. By fourth Year, they prepare and submit a dissertation of their choice, which provides an insight into independent research methods and continues to foster independent thinking.

Students can also spend a term or a year studying in a French university as part of their four-year programme. In addition, they may intercalate a year working in France.

What do you do with it?
