Instructor Bio:

Kelcey Schmitz, MSEd, is a program associate in the Department of Special Education at University of Kansas. She works through the Kansas Technical Assistance System Network to train educators in evidence-based prevention and intervention strategies in the area of behavior. She has published numerous articles on the subject of preventing escalation of problem behaviors along with presenting at the state and national level.

Workshop Description:

Participants will learn the importance of being able to effectively manage problem behavior in school and deescalate students who exhibit a range of behaviors from minor disruption and non-compliance to serious acting-out behavior, and how to intervene during each phase of the cycle and the importance of intervening early, before escalation occurs. Ms. Schmitz will discuss proactive and preventative strategies so participants can learn how to teach, reinforce, and maintain positive behavior and decrease inappropriate behaviors that can lead to intensifying situations. Participants will identify the seven phases of escalating behavior and how to intervene during each phase.

Workshop Objectives: Upon successful completion of this workshop, students will understand how to apply the following concepts in their own classrooms:

*Understand why it is important to be able to effectively manage disruptive and non-compliant behaviors.

*Understand that problem behaviors occur within the acting out cycle.

*Identify the seven phases of escalating behavior and learn how to intervene during each phase.

*Learn proactive, preventative, and low-intensity classroom management strategies to eliminate, neutralize, or minimize the occurrence of escalating behaviors while increasing positive student behavior.
