This Semester the Task in Our Group Was to Design a Building in Isfahan

Summary

This semester, the task in our group was to design a building in Isfahan. My project was a multifunctional bridge, which stands over a canal. The idea was from the Fallingwater, a house which was designed by American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. Falling water was built on a small waterfall, therefore, I was very interested to design a floating building on the river.

Functionally, my building was divided into 3 parts: the underground is a Ferry Terminal. There are two platforms on each side of the building. The ground floor is for retailing( just in one side), and the first floor is a bridge. This floor also includes some small shops which surrounds a spiral staircase in the middle.Besides, there is a mini park in the corner of the floor. The top floor is a restaurant which includes an internal public eating area in the middle and some opening private rooms at sides. In addition, I built a small garden in the middle to provide beautiful scenery for customers as they are eating.

The main circulation space is the first floor( the bridge), where people can walk through from one end to another, and can reach the restaurant through the spiral staircase. Also, there are two stairs on both side of the floor which leads to the platforms. The second floor includes a balcony which is divided into small rooms for private uses, the corridor which leads to the rooms is the main circulation space in this floor, as private rooms were built within ,and these rooms are separated by wooden wall, therefore, people can go to each room through the balcony.

Structure and material: basically I have used timber as the main material, as timber is relatively light to other building materials. However, in order to make the building stable, I also used concrete as the first floor(the bridge)’s material, and therefore the supporters in this floor were made of concrete, such as walls(retail)and columns. Supporter of the second floor is a large timber frame skylight, which connects from the first floor to the second floor. Sunlight can shine though the skylight and reach the garden, making the garden a more natural place to be in, so that customers can enjoy their food. .
