Context: / The Postholder is responsible to the Headteacher, the Governing Body and the Local Education Authority and will work within the rules and regulations of the current Pay and Conditions Document. The precise details of the working arrangements are subject to agreement with the Headteacher who will also inform the postholder of their duties and responsibilities. These may be amended in consultation with the postholder from time to time.
Accountability: / To support the Headteacher’s overall leadership, development and management of the teaching and learning of all pupils. To have a class teacher responsibility and be able to teach FS and KS1, to take a leading role in the monitoring and evaluation of standards across the whole school. To be a leading professional actively promoting effective teaching and learning practices across the school. To take an active role in strategic planning and to liaise effectively with colleagues. To be committed to and support the vision and values of the school and deputise for the Headteacher in her absence.

Assistant Headteacher

Key Tasks

  • Deputise for the Headteacher in the event of absence or other urgent business.
  • Make a leading contribution to the development of the general school ethos andits mission statement.
  • Support the Headteacher in developing and maintaining high morale and confidence amongst all staff.
  • Assist the Headteacher in determining general school policy and managing itsimplementation.
  • Personally support, follow and implement the School’s policies and procedures, and set an example of high professional standards and leadership.
  • Assist the Headteacher in managing the School on a day-to-day basis.
  • With the Headteacher, make a leading contribution to the School’s monitoring and review processes forpupils’ attainment and teaching/learning.
  • Use Leadership and Management (LM) time effectively for these purposes. A proportion of timetabled time will be designated as LM time, specifically for the Assistant Headteacher role.
  • Support the Headteacher in school self review and self evaluation procedures, including thestrategic use of analysis of performance data, and the subsequent formulation of the School ImprovementPlan / Raising Attainment Plan and Continuing Professional Development.

Leadership

Teaching and Learning Responsibilities

  • Understand the priorities in the Foundation and National Curriculum. Strive for the highest possible standards for all children.
  • Engage in discussion with colleagues about children’s progress and classroom provision.
  • Use teaching methods which encourage enthusiasm and show understanding of the learning process.

Planning for Achievement

  • Evaluate the impact of initiatives and targets and discuss planning for improvement with the Headteacher and staff.
  • Plan pupil experiences that show understanding of progression and model good classroom practice to staff.
  • Monitor the quality of teaching, learning and achievement throughout the school in order to set challenging targets for improvement.

Working with People

  • Work effectively with parents and the community to promote the school and develop opportunities for children.
  • Use coaching skills to encourage the professional development of colleagues.
  • Act as a Team Leader in Performance Review and take responsibility for your own Professional Development.
  • Prioritise and manage your own time effectively to fulfil a work/life balance.
  • Lead and manage meetings, delegate tasks to colleagues.

Managing Resources:

  • Work with the Headteacher and Governors to recruit high quality staff.
  • Be involved in setting the strategic plan for the school, evaluating the effectiveness of initiatives.
  • Evaluate the impact of resources in the development of opportunities. Manage the budget for consumable resources for the Foundation Stage.
  • Promote the development of a stimulating and engaging working environment, both in your own classroom and in the school as a whole.

Health and Safety:

  • Ensure the Health, Safety and Well-Being of children in your care.
  • Take a leading role in ensuring the school is a safe place for children, staff and all in the community.
  • Be aware of statutory procedures for emergency situations that may arise whilst you have responsibility for the school.

Managing your Areas of Responsibility

Team leader

▪Ensure policies and documentation reflect current practice.

▪Contribute towards the annual school plan.

▪Model and share good practice for the Foundation Stage and KS1 drawing on personal knowledge, current legislation and through sharing good practice with other schools.

▪Monitor provision, progression and standards in line with the schedule for observation and monitoring, and ensure moderation takes place.

  • Have awareness of the needs of able children and those with learning difficulties.
  • Attend appropriate training and meetings to develop your personal knowledge, and provide or organise relevant training for staff to ensure high quality teaching and learning in these curriculum areas.
  • Deliver Inset to colleagues and advise on strategies to aid progression.
  • Ensure that the learning environment is stimulating and supports learning.
  • Ensure teachers share accountability for children’s progression within their classes.
  • Ensure team leaders share accountability for children’s progression within year groups.
  • Advise, contribute to and, where appropriate, co-ordinate the professional development of staff to increase their effectiveness in responding to pupils and provide support and training to colleagues in relation to understanding the needs of pupils and the importance of raising their achievement.
  • Support staff by ensuring that all those involved have the information necessary to secure improvements in teaching and learning, disseminating good practice across the school
