Scholarship Guidelines and instructions

The purpose of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund (CHASF) is to provide scholarships for college, technical or vocational school to young residents of housing owned or managed by the Charlotte Housing Authority (including the Housing Choice Voucher program).

Scholarship Application

Minimum Eligibility

Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship applicants must meet both of the following criteria:

1.  Be a resident of public housing owned or managed by the Charlotte Housing Authority (including the Housing Choice Voucher program) and be named as an occupant in the current lease for at least one year prior to the scholarship application deadline.

2.  Applicants attending college, vocational or technical school for the first time must not be over 21 years of age as of September 1 of the school year for which the scholarship award is to be made. Applicants already attending or who have previously attended a college, vocational or technical school must not be over 24 years of age as of September 1 of the school year for which the scholarship award is to be made.

APPLICATION PACKET instructions

Before mailing in your application packet, be sure to enclose:

1.  Completed scholarship application form

2.  2013-2014 Student Aid Report (SAR) from your Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) through the U.S. Department of Education. For additional information or to apply, please visit www.fafsa.ed.gov

3.  An official transcript of grades for the applicant’s most recently completed coursework. This may include high school transcripts, GED score report or any postsecondary transcripts. Internet/electronic transcripts will not be accepted

4.  Copy of the “Cost of Attendance” for the college(s) you are applying. For more information, please contact the Office of Financial Aid of the college(s) you are applying.

5.  One recommendation letter from one of the categories below (Please note that recommendations from relatives or persons under 21 years of age will not be accepted.)

·  Teacher, counselor, coach or other school administrator

·  Employer, minister, community leader or other non-related adult

6.  A one –two page typed (double-spaced, 11 or 12-point type font) personal statement in which you develop your position on all of the topics below:

·  Describe what your life’s goals and objectives are and how obtaining additional education or a college degree will further these goals and objectives

·  Explain what qualifies you for this scholarship

·  Describe your financial need for scholarship assistance

7.  Applications submitted electronically (e.g. fax, email) or that are incomplete will be disqualified

8.  Print single side only and do not staple applications

SELECTION CRITERIA

The scholarship committee will consider the following when selecting recipients:

1.  Financial need as determined by the costs of college attendance compared with an applicant’s household income and other financial factors.

2.  Prior academic performance, personal achievements and school and community involvement.

3.  Commitment to and demonstrated potential for success in college, technical or vocational school.

Finalists are required to attend a personal interview with the CHASF Scholarship Committee.

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Scholarships will range from $500 to $3,400 at the discretion of the Charlotte Housing Authority Scholarship Fund Selection Committee.

Confirming Delivery

Delivery of your application will not be confirmed via phone or email. If you wish to confirm delivery, you may either:

1.  Insert a stamped, self-addressed envelope (Allow 4 weeks for confirmation)

2.  Use a mail service that provides proof of delivery (e.g., USPS Certified Mail, FedEx, etc.)

SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS

Foundation For The Carolinas awards scholarships on the basis of a competitive process that may consider academic achievement, extracurricular and community involvement, a statement of the applicant’s personal aspirations and educational goals, financial need and references. Applicants are advised to thoroughly review the guidelines for specific criteria relating to the scholarship for which they are applying. Scholarships are awarded at the discretion of the Foundation's Board of Directors based on scholarship committee recommendations. The Foundation pays scholarship funds directly to the recipient’s school. Scholarships are designated for tuition, required fees, books and supplies only. Scholarships are awarded for one year only. The Foundation may consider renewal scholarships provided funds are available, the recipient enrolls full-time and the recipient maintains qualifying criteria. Scholarships are awarded without regard to race, color, ethnicity, national origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation.
