OUTLINE

Background

On 12 May 2008, an M8.0 intraplate earthquake epicentered in Wenchuan County, Sichuan Province, China, left nearly 90 thousand people dead or missing in its wake and caused tremendous economic and societal damage.

Over long years, Japan has conducted advanced research on earthquake focal mechanisms as well as on earthquake prediction, disaster mitigation and restoration, and has obtained significant results in the process. In the aftermath of the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, Japan reformed its research system, redoubling its efforts in the area of mitigation and restoration. Now, Japan is expected to use this experience and expertise in implementing collaborations between Japanese and Chinese researchers aimed elucidating the mechanisms of mega-earthquakes and at advancing research on disaster mitigation and restoration. It is hoped that such collaboration will contribute to the restoration effort in the aftermath of the Wenchuan Earthquake in China and to creating countermeasures for future large earthquakes in both countries.

This Forum marks the first big step forward in that direction. It will assemble frontline Japanese and Chinese researchers in the fields of 1) Seismological and Geological Aspects, 2) Effects on Infrastructures, Buildings and Slopes, and Reconstructions, and 3) Long-term Recovery of Society and Community. They will deliver reports on their latest research results and discuss the direction of future research collaboration from a long-term perspective.

About the China-Japan Science Forum

The China-Japan Science Forum is a project carried out under the Flexible International Exchanges component of the Strategic Program for Building an Asian Science and Technology Community, funded through Japan’s Special Coordination Funds for Promoting Science and Technology.

The aim of this forum project is to contribute to strengthening the cooperative relationship in science and technology between Japan and China in fields of mutual interests from a mid-/long-term viewpoint.

The first Forum was held on the theme “Environmental changes, Bio-resources, and Global Warming” in Beijing, China, on March 6, 2008.
