Now in its twelfth year, PERI’s Small Entity Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to help staff and officials of small public jurisdictions and community nonprofit organizations attend the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) Annual Conference. In 2009, scholarships will be awarded to up to 20 individuals whose organizations do not have the budget resources to send someone to PRIMA’s national public sector risk management conference. Scholarship recipients can attend dozens of conference workshops, meet and learn from vendors and suppliers, and network with public sector risk management professionals from across the country.
Scholarship Benefits
Each scholarship recipient receives: $1,000 direct financial assistance to be applied to any costs of attending the conference, including travel, lodging, and registration expenses; a discounted registration fee; If not already a member of PRIMA, a complimentary one-year membership to PRIMA. (Please note that an attendee’s conference registration fee covers all workshops and sessions, materials, entrance to the Expo, complimentary morning coffee service, evening receptions, and three lunches.)
Eligibility
The PERI Small Entity Scholarship Program is open to employees and elected officials oflocal governments and schools, and staff and board members of small community nonprofit organizations.A diverse group of public sector and nonprofit staff and officials representing just about every department and type of public entity have received the Small Entity Scholarship. Recipients have included city and town managers, city and county clerks, finance directors, risk managers, police and fire officials, public works, human resources, safety directors, school administrators and business officials, and directors and staff of nonprofit organizations.
Eligibility is based on the size or operating budget of the organization, and the scopeof the applicant’s risk management responsibilities. An applicant must meet theseguidelines:
- is an employee or official of a small public entity, defined as:
—a municipality with a population of 50,000 or fewer, or
—a county with a population of 100,000 or fewer, or
—a school district with an average daily attendance of 8,000 or fewer
- or is an employee or board member of a community-serving nonprofitorganization with an annual operating budget of $2 million or less;
- has not attended a PRIMA Annual Conference within the past three years;
- has direct or indirect responsibility for the risk management and/or insurance function for the organization.
You do not have to be a PRIMA member to apply. Only one individual per organization may receive a scholarship in a single year.
Application Procedure

Deadline: Applications must be postmarked no later than February 27, 2009.Applications sent via email must be received no later than February 27, 2009.
Recipient’s Responsibilities
It is not expected that the $1,000 scholarship award will cover every expense relatedto attending the conference. Recipients will be responsible for funding the expensesnot covered by the award.Recipients are expected to attend a full complement of educational sessions and otherevents held during PRIMA’s Conference. They’ll also be asked to complete a brief evaluationof the scholarship program at the end of the conference.
About the PRIMA Conference
The 2009 PRIMA Annual Conference Expo will be held May 31-June 3, 2009 in Dallas, Texas at the Hilton Anatole. The conference brings together more than 2,000 employees and local officials, vendors, and suppliers in an event devoted to improving risk management in the public sector. More than 80 concurrent educational sessions address a variety of public risk management topics and issues.
