ESA MEMBERS RESEARCH HIGHER DEGREE SCHOLARSHIP

Conditions of award

The purpose of the Scholarship is for research in any area of endocrinology. The research must be conducted in Australia.

At the conclusion of the recipient’s study, the recipient must submit his/her research findings for presentation at the Endocrine Society of Australia annual scientific meeting.

Eligibility

The principal supervisor of the research higher degree (RHD) student must be a member of the ESA (ie Fellows and Members). The principal supervisor canonly submit one PhD or MD application per year. RHD students can have either a clinical or basic science qualification and be eligible for entry into a PhD or MD program. Awardees must join ESA when accepting the award.

Applicants may have already commenced their higher degree and be in the first year of study when applying. Academic transcript detailing date of enrolment must be provided.

Applicants will not be eligible for an ESA scholarship if they are awarded or presently hold a scholarship such as an APA or Dora Lush scholarship or scholarship from a private foundation such as the Asthma Foundation.

Applicants will not be eligible for an ESA scholarship if they do not have ethics approval for the project.

Tenure

The Scholarship is for a period of one year, conditional on a satisfactory progress report 12 months into the Scholarship. A 12 monthly report will be required for each year of the scholarship tenure and is due on the 30th November each year. The report must include a submission from the Principal supervisor confirming student progress. The report must be emailed to the ESA Secretariat

Following completion of the project, a full report is to be submitted to the Research Foundation by 31 January with copies of publications and abstracts included. This report will be reviewed by the Board of Directors and the Scholarship Selection Committee.

Awardees must attend the ESA Annual Scientific Meeting each year of tenure.

Application

Applications are to be submitted using the ESA Research Foundation Application Form.

The names of two referees who can comment on the personal, clinical and scientific suitability of the candidate (one referee must be the project supervisor, the other an independent referee with expertise in

  • the area of research). It is the applicant’s responsibility to ensure that referee’s reports are emailed to ESA by October 30, 2018.
  • A report from the Head of the Department where the research will be conducted, indicating the availability of suitable facilities and scientific support.
  • A letter from the relevant Ethics Committee confirming approval for the proposed project. The ethics approval may be pending at the time of application but the scholarship will not be awarded until a certificate of ethics approval is provided to the ESA secretariat.

Applications are assessed by the Scholarship Selection Committee of the ESA Council. The date for receipt of applications is 30 October 2018

Administration of the Scholarship

The Scholarship is to be undertaken in a hospital, university department, research institute or other approved institute.

Stipend and allowances

For the PhD scholarships, the annual stipend will be $20 000. A travel allowance of $500 per year will be included. The total value of the scholarship will therefore be $22 500 (includes 10%GST).

Publications

Any publications (papers or conference abstracts) derived from the PhD project must acknowledge the financial support of the Endocrine Society of Australia.
