Introduction

Right from its inception, the activities of Guildance Community Development Foundation (GCDF) has always pivoted on three fulcrums: health awareness, wealth creation and community development. Again, our activities in 2013 focus on these three objectives but more particularly tilted towards hearth care delivery basically because of the need of the moment and specific supports/medical items we received from our partners. These items include mosquito net, birthing kits, drugs and many other medical items. In all, the year can be described as success and very eventful for GCDF as we conducted series of activities succinctly captured in this report.

ACTIVITIES OF GCDF in 2013

1. Awareness on fight against Malaria and Distribution of Mosquito Net.

Malaria is an ancient serious pandemic in Africa and the world at large killing more than six million people every year. Several efforts have been made by different agencies the world over to tame the tide of this disease. In two different occasions in the year 2013, GCDF join this efforts to campaign against the widespread of the disease. Our campaign efforts cut across the urban and the rural community.

On 23rd and 26th of May 2013, the first of the campaign took place at Oke Ado Baptist Church Ibadan in which about 1000 members of the congregation were in attendance. During this programme, Deacon (Dr.) Aderemi Taiwo Olusola, who is also the Director of Programme of GCDF delivered a lecture on the uses and advantages of mosquito net in preventing malaria especially in children and pregnant women. However in his speech, the president of the NGO, Mr Adisa Kabiru Adeniyi submitted that as much as effective as the usage of mosquito net has been proven in preventing malaria over time, it is surprisingto discover how low the people in the society make use of this life saving item.He gave this as reason why the NGO embarks on the distribution of the net at this point in time. The programme was climaxed with the distribution of about 100 pieces of mosquito net to the members of the church on a family basis.

The second campaign on fight against malaria took place on 3rd June, 2013 at Emun community in which about 6 villages located in Lagelu and Egbeda local government of Oyo state benefited. On the campaign day, about 100 pieces of mosquito net were distributed free of charge to the villagers who express their profound gratitude to this act of generosity on the part of GCDF. This distribution was done amidst a vivid illustration on how to hang, use and maintain the net for effective work. This became necessary as most of the villagers are not literate enough to read and/or understand the manufacturer usage instruction attached to the net.

2. Distribution of Child Birthing Kits

Through our partnership with sweet mother organization, GCDF was empowered in the year to reach out to pregnant women through free distribution of birthing kits to waiting mothersin Ido Local Government, Ibadan South west Local Government and Oluyole Local government, Odeda Local Government (Ogun State)and about six other local governments.

On the16th of July 2013, GCDF collaborated with Lafia Hospital Apata in Ibadan to reach out to these women. The Hospital had earlier on organized the Local birth attendance (LBA) before hand and sensitized them of the program.

The Chief Medical Director of Lafia hospital, Dr. Aderemi Taiwo Olusola in his lecture enunciated the importance of the usage of health safety kit in child birth and thanked sweet mother and GCDF for this kind gesture. About 30 executives’ members and 53 members of the LBA were in attendance in this programme asides the senior staff of the hospital. Each of the participants was given 5 pieces of the birth kits and some donated to the hospital for subsequent usage. In all, about 500 pieces of the kits were distributed.

In the same manner, the distribution of the kits also took place on 25th of July2013 at Mobolaji Hospital, Oke Ado Ibadan Oyo state. Close to 500 quantities of this item were also distributed.

The distribution of the kit was equally extended to Lagos state through one of our volunteer,Midwife Opeyemi Shomope who took initiative to distribute the item to women who attend anti-natal at Ejire Flagship center in Lagos. The kits were distributed to about 20 women who usually come early for the ANC.
