NOTE: In general, provost approval is not needed for initial or renewal appointments for adjunct faculty. Provost approval is only required for initial appointments of adjunct faculty which do not follow the following “standard” guidelines; that is, provost approval is needed only for initial appointments of adjunct faculty which are exceptions to the following:

  • For those without terminal degrees, the appointment rank shall generally be as Instructor.
  • For those with terminal degrees, the appointment rank shall generally be as Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor.
  • Adjunct faculty will be appointed as Associate Professors generally only if they have a terminal degree and have held this rank elsewhere and/or have at least seven years of faculty experience.
  • Adjunct faculty will be appointed as Professors generally only if they have a terminal degree and have held this rank elsewhere and/or have at least twelve years of faculty experience.

With the support of the department faculty, we are pleased to offer you a temporary appointment as Adjunct Assistant Professor [**OR** or appropriate rank] in the [School/Department] of xxx in the College of Health Sciences at the University of Delaware. NOTE: “To appoint any person to an academic rank requires a positive recommendation from the faculty of the academic unit to which the person is to be assigned” – Faculty Handbook, Section 4: Personnel Policies for Faculty. Your adjunct academic appointment in the [School/Department] of xxx will begin September 1, 2010 [**OR** July 1, 2010] and will end on August 31, 2011 [**OR** June 30, 2011]. NOTE: Appointment is for a stipulated term, but not to exceed three years. If individual is still active, then faculty need to vote to continue adjunct status beyond the third year and reappointment memo is required. Faculty Handbook stipulates that adjunct appointments are for a “limited period of time,” but doesn’t say it must be no more than three years.

Adjunct faculty are members of the academic staff who are appointed for a limited period of time during the years in which they are actively involved in the [School/Department] and they are expected to contribute to the [School/Department] in the form of teaching, research, and/or consultation. NOTE: State here any additional conditions related to the appointment.

Adjunct faculty members are not eligible for tenure and no stipend or salary is paid while in an adjunct status. Please reference the enclosed document for a detailed list of responsibilities and privileges.
