EXPLANATION OF UNIT CONTENTS

  1. TITLE PAGE –Use the title page template adopted by the class.
  2. UNIT GRAPHIC ORGANIZER(S) – To develop ideas for organizing your unit, use an appropriate brainstorming guide such as the two listed below. The completed mat will serve as an overview sheet that outlines the components of your unit.
  3. STEM Unit Brainstorming Mat
  4. STEAM Unit Brainstorming Mat
  5. UNIT MATERIALS LIST–Make a materials list by activity that will accommodate a class of 30 students. Distinguish between teacher materials and student materials.
  6. CONTENT SUMMARY SHEET–Do the necessary research to compose a single page (single-spaced) word document containing the background information the teachers (or students) need to know in order to teach (understand) this unit. Include on your reference list professional articles and links to websites for further reading or research on the subject.
  7. STANDARDS ALIGNMENT SHEET(S)– Complete a standards correlation sheet for the unit indicating specific grade level standards that may be addressed by each lesson in the STEM disciplines. Remember the practices and process standards.
  8. LESSON PLANS or SHEET WITH INTERNET LINKS FOR THE LESSON PLANSLocate several rigorous, grade-level appropriate, multidisciplinary lessons within the topic area. Specify the targeted grade levels of each lesson and student sheet. On the lesson plan(s), document the originator of the lesson(s). Examine reliable, available, and free education resources from reputable sites across the United States and world. Provide the information necessary to locate and download each of the lessons included in this unit. Cite sources on your reference sheet.
  9. STUDENT PAGES CORRESPONDING TO THE LESSONS–Provide an electronic copy or the information necessary to locate and download each of the student pages affiliated with the lessons in this unit. At least one lesson should involve the design engineering process for which a Design Engineering Challenge Organizer has been completed for the students to use. Student pages for science investigations or problem-based lessons in mathematics should also be included. The following are examples of supporting students sheets:
  10. Design Engineering Challenge Organizer, or
  11. Science Investigation Guide, or
  12. Contextual Mathematics Problem
  13. VIDEO MEDIA– Identify a video of a real-world application that supports the unit focus. Provide the information necessary to access the video media.
  14. REFERENCE SHEET– Generate a Reference page that includes the essential web addresses pertaining to the unit and any other sources used to develop this unit.
