Tech I – Natural Resources Technician

Position Purpose:

Provide assistance with various aspects of fish, wildlife and recreation programs at the Pelton Round Butte Hydroelectric Project, to ensure comprehensive and cost-effective implementation of mitigation and enhancement conditions required under the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission operating license for the Project.

Essential Job Responsibilities: Functions with percent of time spent performing function.

Assists with operation of a variety of fish trapping devices, including screw traps and Merwin nets, in Project reservoirs and tributaries to sample downstream migrating juvenile salmon, steelhead and other salmonid species. (40%)
Assists with fish processing at upstream and downstream fish passage facilities (i.e. Pelton Adult Fish Trap and Selective Water Withdrawal fish transfer facility, respectively) (15%).
Assists with water quality studies in the Project reservoirs and Deschutes River (15%)
Assists with fish surveys in tributary streams using various techniques, such as radio telemetry, redd counts, spawning surveys, electrofishing and snorkeling. (10%)
Assists with enhancement and maintenance activities on Project wildlife habitat lands, including noxious weed control, juniper thinning, fence repair/replacement, and seedings (10%).
Enters data from various field studies into electronic spreadsheets and databases. (5%).
Assists with operation and maintenance activities at Project recreation areas including landscaping work, cleaning and janitorial work, and trail repairs. (5%).

Minor Job Responsibilities: Not critical, but needs to be done.

Assists other PRB fish/wildlife/habitat program activities as needed.

Communications: Description and reason for contacts.

Communicates and coordinates activities with immediate supervisor and other team members and co-workers.

Challenges: Complexity and diversity of actions.

Ability to learn and assist with biological sampling using a variety of widely-accepted methods and techniques.
Ability to accurately collect, record, and electronically enter biological data.
Ability to work well with other team members, PGE biological, recreation and hydro staff, agency biologists, conservation groups, and volunteers.
Ability to work safely in inclement and/or extreme weather conditions, difficult terrain, rivers and reservoirs.
Ability to explain work progress and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and immediate supervisor.

Knowledge/Skills/Experience Required:

Typically a high school diploma or GED.
An interest in natural resources and outdoor recreation.
Preferably a basic understanding of the fish and wildlife sciences.
Basic computer skills.
Good swimming skills.
Valid driver’s license and demonstrated good driving habits.

Ability to work out-of-doors in potentially adverse weather conditions.
Ability to work safely in and around standing and flowing waters.

Ability to operate power boats and pickup trucks.
Oregon Driver’s License.
