Purpose of Job / As the Recovery Team Leader for CGL Newham Drug and Alcohol Service, you will be supporting a team of Recovery Workers to deliver quality interventions to service users with complex needs.
Newham Drug and Alcohol Service is an integrated end-to-end treatment and recovery service which offers a wide range of pharmacological and psychosocial interventions to Newham residents 18 years and over, their families and significant others who are experiencing issues with drugs and/or alcohol use.
The post holder will be integral to ensuring a high quality service that promotes recovery, resilience, and self-determination across the service. Newham Drug and Alcohol Service will support people in a recovery oriented system of intervention; the service will be user-focused and aspirational in its work with service users to realise their identified goals including the attainment of the highest quality of life possible, social reintegration and sustained recovery from problematic substance use.
Under the supervision of the Deputy Services Manager, the post-holder will lead a team of operational staff to provide a recovery-focused treatment journey for individuals with alcohol misuse problems within the Newham Drug and Alcohol Service. The post holder will provide line management supervision and will support staff to develop their practice in strength-based approaches that evidence increased and sustainable recovery outcomes for service users as directed by the Deputy Services Manager and in line with contract requirements.
The post holder will maintain high professional standards at all times, whilst ensuring measurable positive outcomes are achieved for the client group. The post-holder will support the Deputy Services Manager in the continual development and improvement of service delivery and follow actions on their delegation and direction. The post-holder will be responsible for the management of staff resources and premises and will delegate effectively to ensure the day to day running of the service and ensure that this runs within allocated budgets.
The post-holder will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with partners both internally within the service and externally within a wider partnership.
The post-holder will be expected to take responsibility for personal development and participate in regular supervision and appraisal.
To further facilitate this role, the post-holder will keep up to date with relevant safeguarding legislation and knowledge around recommended and evidence-based interventions and practice guidance. The post-holder will also support the roll-out and delivery of CGL’s Foundations of Recovery programme across the London Borough of Newham.
The post holder will be required to work flexibly within an agreed number of hours to maintain the most appropriate level of service provision. This may include evening and weekend working.
The post holder will be responsible for contributing to the overall performance of the services to ensure that contractual output targets are achieved and will be required to record and input client data and information in order that the service operates within contractual, administrative and financial requirements.
The post holder will be expected to take responsibility for personal development, identifying personal training needs and participate in regular supervision and appraisal.

Key Activities:

  • Offer a practice and supervisory lead to a team of alcohol and substance misuse recovery workers in accordance with CGL policies and protocols.
  • Developing therapeutic alliances with people who have substance misuse problems and developing effective partnerships with service users to support their individual recovery journeys, engaging in key work sessions, offering health promotion and harm reduction advice and screening (including blood borne viruses) alongside other clinical and psychosocial interventions.
  • Manage the Engagement and Care Coordination Service with responsibility for the management, monitoring & evaluation and service development.
  • In conjunction with other team leaders develop training and educational packages/material for service and agency needs. To support and challenge workers on specific aspects of their practice. To be open to support and challenge from your colleagues
  • Ensure that procedures are constantly reviewed to promote best practice and evidenced based practice in accordance with UK Guidelines on Clinical Management, NICE guidance, and CGL clinical protocols and procedures.
  • Working to ensure the smooth transition of service user’s clinical needs (including prescribing) into the community shared care service.
  • As required carry out comprehensive assessments and contribute to the development and review of recovery/treatment plans and delivery of psychosocial interventions including wrap around services and external supporting agencies.

  • Engage proactively with both line management and supervision and maintain a current knowledge of appropriate interventions.
  • Work closely and proactively with the management and staff team to ensure adherence to all relevant Health & Safety Policies and ensure that risk is managed appropriately within the service
  • Provide evidence based advice and support to direct reports in accordance with CGL policies, agreed protocols and national legislation to bring about effective treatment decisions.
  • As required develop, review and audit recovery/treatment plans, provide health education especially in regard to harm minimisation, blood borne viruses and overdose prevention.
  • Utilise psychosocial intervention, including ITEP, in both one-to-one and group settings to promote engagement in treatment services and ownership of Recovery Planning.
  • Attend meetings appropriate to the development and maintenance of the role in agreement with and under the direction of the line manager.
  • To be responsible for the implementation of engagement and re-engagement interventions for clients on your caseload

Person Specification

Essential criteria:

Experience of working with alcohol and/or substance misuse issues and a clear understanding of the need for and ability to deliver quality services.

Management and Supervisory experience of a substance misuse team

Maintain professional boundaries and work effectively with all external agencies.

Experience of community based opiate substitute prescribing and alcohol detoxification schemes

Experience of undertaking comprehensive client assessments and developing care plans and treatment plans for those who are suitable for community treatment/support services

A working knowledge of performance management and meeting demanding targets anddeadlines.

Knowledge of the issues facing alcohol and/or substance misusers including appropriate medical interventions, social care, welfare benefits, health and emergency accommodation.

Ability to assess and care plan service users and formulate written reports as necessary.

Demonstrate skills to undertake administrative duties.

Experience of contributing to project development.

Sound and demonstrable knowledge of clinical prescribing issues.

Auditing skills to inform evaluation of the service and identify areas for development.

Ability to develop and present contract reports
