ROLE PROFILE

TITLE: Programme Development and Quality Volunteer
TEAM/PROGRAMME: PDQ / LOCATION: Freetown
GRADE: / CONTRACT LENGTH: 3-6 months
CHILD SAFEGUARDING: (select only one)
Level 2: either the post holder will have access to personal data about children and/or young people as part of their work; or the post holder will be working in a ‘regulated’ position (accountant, barrister, solicitor, legal executive); therefore a police check will be required (at ‘standard’ level in the UK or equivalent in other countries).
BACKGROUND
Save the Children’s programme in Sierra Leone was established in 1999 and focused initially on providing immediate needs to children affected by war. The current programme adopts a Child Rights Programming approach aiming to support permanent change for children in the thematic areas of protection, health, education and child rights governance. We are operational in Kailahun, Pujehun, Western Rural and Western Urban. In the event of a major humanitarian emergency, the role holder will be expected to work outside the normal role profile and be able to vary working hours accordingly.
SCOPE OF THE ROLE
TEAM ADMINISTRATION & COORDINATION: Currently the Programme Development and Quality (PDQ) team has undergone a large transformation, recruiting a large number of new team members. The team is comprised of only senior staff members that can frequently be distracted from issues of quality and business development while covering other coordination gaps or operational roles. We hope that by having our first national PDQ volunteer, the advisers can outsource vehicle booking, minute/note taking, external and internal PDQ communications, ad-hoc support to data collection and research consultants, back stopping at external meetings dissemination of information including accountability reporting, PDQ inductions, logistics arrangement, documentation of events etc.

Role Dimensions:
KEY AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY:
TEAM ADMINISTRATION
  • Take meeting minutes and notes for regular team minutes
  • Facilities support service requests on behalf of the Programme Quality team
  • Proof reading and consolidation of multi-thematic information albeit reports or research
  • Provide interim cover for other team members while they’re away
  • Back-stop technical adviser for working group meetings by representing the organisation when required
  • Documentation and recording Monitoring & Evaluation files
  • Organise Child Rights Situational Analysis, trainings, facilitation and arranging logistics
  • Facilitate consultants, support them to navigate the Save the Children system
  • Produce quality communications or presentations for members, partners and donors
  • Facilitate focus group discussions, or similar participatory information gathering for new programming areas, or to gather feedback on existing programming
  • Perform any other activities based on Line manager’s assignment
General Accountability
  • Comply with all relevant Save the Children policies and procedures with respect to child protection, health and safety, security, equal opportunities, whistle blowing, and fraud policies.
  • Prepare and submit monthly updates and quarterly reports to line Manager
  • Participate in internal and external meetings to review the effectiveness of technical support provided
  • Ensure that all work undertaken is child focused and contributes to the achievement of the programme sector strategy objectives and outcome indicators

QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in any relevant field or Higher National Diploma/Diploma in related field
  • 0-1 years experience in a related field of programmes, project management or with NGO related experience

EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS
Essential
  • Willingness to learn and work for Save the Children
  • Interest in Monitoring, Evaluation, Learning & Accountability
  • Understanding of social relations and commitment to integrate gender, diversity and other power related issues into programme activities.
  • Fluency in written and spoken English.
  • Ability to write clear and well structured reports in English.
  • Experience in working collaboratively within a team.
  • Ability to plan and organise work with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Commitment to and understanding of Save the Children’s aims, values and principles.
  • Willingness to commit to Save the Children's Child Protection Policy.
  • Competence with Microsoft office packages
