  1. Registration:

Unless other arrangements are made by discussing your situation with Kurt and making a brief proposal in writing, all students will earn credits as EOSC 448 and GEOG 447.

The following overhead lists all the students registered so far; all course registration has been taken care of by Teresa Woodley in the EOSC office. Hooray Teresa for her excellent support!

  1. Fees: All students listed have made their $150 course deposit. Student must ALSO make a $100. tuition deposit to UBC to secure their registration.
  • It is important to have our enrollment and course fees paid in full well in advance, so we can fill gaps from our wait list if need be:
  • April 11 is the last day to withdraw and get your deposit back.
  • July 1 = the deadline to pay your "pod" fees in full (checks payable to UBC EOS; mail them to: Teresa Woodley—UBC Earth and Ocean Sciences— 6339 Stores Rd.— Vancouver, BC V6T 1Z4; with the Memo reading “Sustainability Field Course”
  • Urban : fees = $150.; you are paid in full.
  • Slocan and Coastal $800. total; you owe $650.
  • These fees MAY rise a bit, to accommodate eating and living at the pilot ecovillage.
  • After July 7, you may lose your place without notice to the first person on the wait list or you may be assessed a $100. late payment fee.

  1. Essential dates:
  • Span of the course: August 5-29 inclusive
  • Course begins: Tues., August 5 at 9am, in this room (EOSC Main room 330A)
  • Depart for field: Sunday August 10 (meeting logistics will be arranged during the first week of class.
  • Back in class at UBC, Monday, August 25 at 9am; place tba. Course ends: Friday August 29 at 4pm.
  • During weeks one and four class meets from 9am-4pm. Some optional evening activities may be arranged.
  1. Housing: The attached document is a proposal to establish a pilot ecovillage at the UBC Farm for the duration of our course. This will certainly make logistics and costs (rent) easier for students, and will certainly enhance therichness of our experience and the cohesion of our group. Living at the pilot ecovillage is not a requirement for the course, however it is highly recommended. If you have reservations about it, please see Kurt or Derek. We will be establishing a covered outdoor kitchen, and will have covered space with tables for eating and working. We envision low impact camping with pit or composting toilets, alongside ecofootprinting this lifestyle. Showers can be had at Osborne Gymnasium. For the privilege of living at The Farm, the group will be given the opportunity to make a lasting contribution, to be determined by the group.
  1. A bicycle is a virtual necessity for the course.
  1. The modest reader is for your consumption during the summer; please read it before class begins on 5 August.
  1. Please do not leave today without checking that your email contact information is correct as listed; also write your summer phone contact info on the yellow sheet.
  1. An equipment list for the field groups looks something like what is attached. Pack light: Artful simplicity is a central theme and one of of the learning outcomes of the course.
  1. Safety First! For the duration of the course, safety is the top priority. You are required to work and live safely. If you are engaged in an activity that may be unsafe, please stop immediately and then discuss the matter. Individuals engaging in any activity which endangers themself and/or others are subject to immediate dismissal from the course, without refund and a failing mark.
  1. We happily anticipate seeing you all at 9 am on August 5 in this room. For updates, please refer to the course website periodically over the summer (hooray Janet!) (this is a new url). Otherwise, if you have essential questions over the summer, contact one of us (preferably one of your pod instructors) via email. Please do be considerate with questions; please help us to limit the number of incoming emails that flood into our inboxes each day.
