Summer Camp Descriptions and Information – 2015

Parkland Magnet Middle School

Beginning Guitar

This one week course isfor students with no experience in guitar who are considering taking it at Parkland. This class covers basic guitar technique, notes in the open position, and performing simple pieces in an ensemble setting. Guitars will be provided.

July 13 – 17, 2015

8 student minimum enrollment – 20 student maximum enrollment

Intermediate Guitar

This one week course is for students who already know notes in the open position and some basic chords. It covers more advanced chords and ensemble music. This class culminates in a Friday performance. Guitars will be provided.

Leadership Camp

This is a one week camp that focuses on leadership skills and team building activities. Students will participate in a variety of group and individual exercises designed to bring out leadership potential. Focus will be on teamwork and achieving a common goal, so a service project will be decided upon by the group. This group is recommended for students in SGA and opened to students with all leadership experience. Field Trip: TBD on Friday.

Astronomy Camp

This will be a hands-on exploration of Astronomy where campers will be doing activities that connect to current space missions and learning about topics that real astronomers are investigating. Campers will use telescopes for observations along with online spacecraft data. One or more field trips will be planned, with one being a full day trip to a space museum on Wednesday, July 22. (Campers must be dropped off at 8:30 am with a bag lunch and picked up at 2:00 pm that day). The camp will include a nighttime observation party (if the sky is clear) with telescopes for campers and their families at a location away from Parkland Middle School (campers must have their own transportation and be accompanied by an adult).

Engineering World Camps

July 13- 17Design, Build ….a Catapult!

A giant has captured your castle. You must decide whether to construct a catapult, manganel or trebuchet to knock out this monster and take back control of your castle.

Each of these summer camps is an intensive ½ day program designed to challenge rising 6th and 7th grade students to design and build a scale model product. Campers will learn sketching techniques in the design phase, how to translate these sketches into CAD drawings and use machine power tools to construct and detail the physical model. Students must have a completed Parent Safety sheet on file and pass a safety test before anyone is permitted to use the power tools. Students are expected to preview specific handouts and worksheets prior to each day’s activities. The camp fee for each session includes the cost of project materials and a t-shirt.

Programming World Camp: August 3 - 14

Programming World Camp is a challenging full day, two week camp designed for rising 8th grade students who are interested in engineering design and programming. In this camp, students will learn how to sketch in CAD, use machine tools and program in RoboLab. The major project will be to design, construct and program a Rube Goldberg style adventure park. Students must have a completed Parent Safety sheet on file and pass a safety test before anyone is permitted to use the power tools. Students are expected to preview specific handouts and worksheets prior to each day’s activities. The cost for this two week camp includes the cost of project materials, a copy of the programming software and a t-shirt.

August 3 - 14, 2015

Learners Today… Leaders Tomorrow

This is one week course will focus on an introduction to Science and Aerospace, study skills, time management and daily middle school routines. This camp is structured and recommended to help acclimate rising 6th grade students to Parkland Magnet Middle School.

Soccer Camp

This beginner to intermediate one week course is for student who are new to soccer or who are looking to improve their limited soccer skills. This class covers the basics such as dribbling and juggling. Specialty soccer moves will also be taught. Students will also learn about formation and positioning. At the end of each lessons, students will play small-sided games against one another.
