Substitute Teacher Information

Requirements

The requirements for substitute teaching in Douglas County are:

·  Clear fingerprint background check, $24.00 charge.

·  At least 60 semester hours of college as verified on OFFICIAL TRANSCRIPTS, or a passing score on the paraprofessional assessment test. The Praxis paraprofessional assessment test scores will be accepted as long as your test scores/certificate is dated before August 2006. For the 2006-07 school year, we will change from the Praxis test to the GACE paraprofessional assessment test. You must receive your test scores before submitting a substitute teacher application. ·  The only exception of not meeting the above requirements will be upon a Principal’s recommendation of an applicant that has prior experience working in a school setting. These applicants must provide a copy of their high school diploma/GED or transcripts showing the graduation date along with a completed application.

·  Attend a half-day workshop.

·  Classroom observation for one full school day at the school of the applicant’s choice after attending workshop.

·  Persons holding current or expired professional teacher certification in any state are exempt from the workshop and the one-day classroom observation is optional. You must provide official transcripts along with a copy of your teaching certificate.

Applications can be obtained at the Board of Education, 9030 Hwy. 5, Douglasville, GA 30134, Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Procedures

Applicants will be contacted to schedule a fingerprint appointment once a completed substitute teacher application has been submitted.

A completed application includes the following:

·  Application Form completed in all areas. Please print your name on the top of the application as it appears on your Social Security Card.

·  Copy of Social Security Card.

·  Copy of documents supporting the I-9 form to establish employment eligibility. Check the reverse side of the I-9 form for a listing of documents that are acceptable. You must provide one item from List A or one item from List B AND List C. Be sure to sign the I-9 form.

·  Georgia Tax forms. Be sure to sign.

·  Federal Tax forms. Be sure to sign.

·  Official College Transcripts (not a copy), or copy of High School Diploma/GED AND Paraprofessional Assessment Test Scores. Substitute Teachers are now required to have at least 60 semester hours of college, or pass the paraprofessional assessment test. ·  Valid or expired professional teaching certificate. This exempts you from the requirement to attend the Substitute Workshop.

Once you have submitted a completed application, Human Resources will consider you for the next workshop as we review the substitute application pool. If you are invited to attend a substitute teacher workshop, we will schedule your fingerprint appointment at that time. A $24.00 money order is required at the time of your fingerprint appointment. Only applicants who have a clear background check will be permitted to attend the workshop.

The workshops are held at the Board of Education, 9030 Hwy. 5, Douglasville, GA 30134,

8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. The tentative 2006-2007 workshop dates are: August 18, 2006, October13, 2006, February 9, 2007, and March 16, 2007.

Rates of Pay, Effective July 1, 2006

·  Regular substitute teachers are paid at the rate of $65.00 per full day.

·  Long-term substitute teachers are paid at the rate of $90.00 per full day.

Only those Subs who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher are eligible for long-term substituting. Those holding a current or expired professional teaching certificate and/or a college degree are eligible to be employed for all teachers absent for a period of 10 or more consecutive days. If there is a break in those 10 consecutive days, the long-term condition no longer applies and the regular daily rate will be paid. In situations where the substitute is eligible for long-term and the substitutes assignment is not deemed long-term at the beginning of the assignment, but turns into an assignment where the teacher will be absent for 10 or more consecutive days, the substitutes daily rate of pay will be adjusted from regular pay to long-term pay which is retroactive to the first day of the consecutive absence.

·  Substitutes who are used for Paraprofessional jobs are paid at the rate of $50.00 per full day.
