Monday---Unit 19 Lesson 1

Skill: ar

Students will understand when the vowels (a, e, I, o and u) are followed by an (r) the vowel sound is controlled by the r.

Students will read and spell words with (ar) vowel.

Teacher displays the vowel (a) followed by the consonant (r). Teacher shows students a picture of the bossy r from page 19-3. Teacher directly states: “I am the bossy r”. When the vowels are with the bossy r, the bossy r controls the vowel sound. However, the r is polite and lets the vowel be first. Students will make a bossy r necklace.

INPUT: The vowel stands in front of the r. Teacher shows the ar card.

The (ar) bossy r sound is /r/. Teacher places the diacritical mark for the r control sound about the letters.(ar)

You hear the /r/ sounds in the word arm.

Display the word car and use finger blending to sound out word.

Teacher and students will:

  1. Skywrite the symbols. Say the letter names (a, r) and draw the diacritical mark above the symbol while saying the sound /r/.
  2. Trace with finger over the symbol page 19-5.
  3. Memory box.

Checking for Understanding: Read the word list on student practice sheet page 19-9 and place the r control diacritical mark above the (ar) in each word.

Spelling: Students will follow along with the teacher in activities.

  1. Spell tabs.
  2. Paper pencil while we apply finger spelling.
  3. Sentence dictation:1. Mark cut his arm. 2. Did the kids pitch the tent in the backyard? 3. The dart hit the mark! 4. The jam jar has a big crack.

Tuesday: Review Lesson 1

Teacher and students will:

  1. Say and write the bossy r sound (ar).
  2. Say and read bossy r (ar) words.
  3. Spell and write bossy r (ar) words.
  4. Sentence dictation same ones as we did on Monday.

Students will watch a short video clip on sharks.

Oral Reading: BK Story: Sharks

Students will be given a quiz over the story.

Discuss quiz answers after all papers are turned in.

Oral Reading: BK Story: I Wish

Wednesday: Unit 19 Lesson 2

Students will reread the BK Story: I Wish

Students will read with a partner and use think pair share to answer questions.

Teacher will give students a quiz over the story.

Skill: red word (who)

Students will learn how to read and spell the red word (who).

Teacher displays the red word (who) and tells the name of the word.

Teacher and students tap letter names out on arm.

Teacher and students trace around red word and write it 3 times.

Teacher displays the following sentence. Who left the bag of rocks in the yard?

Who can be a question word.

Teacher displays the following sentence. I saw who left that bag.

Who can come in the middle of a sentence.

Who always refers to someone or something.

Students will read and spell the sentences on page 19-15.

Thursday---Unit 19 Lesson 3

Skill: (er, ir, ur /er/)

Students will reread the BK Story: Who

Students will read with a partner and use think pair share to answer questions.

Teacher will give students a quiz over the story.

Students will learn when the vowels (a, e, I, o, and u) are followed by an r the vowel sound is controlled by the r.

Students will read and spell words with er, ir, and ur.

Teacher displays the diacritical mark for the r control. Asks students what does this sign stand for? The bossy r or r control sound. Next, teacher displays ar. When the bossy r controls the vowel (a) what is the sound? /r/

Teacher nows displays the (er, ir, and ur) and directly tells when the r controls these vowels it says /er/. You hear it in the word (her). Teacher places the word her under the (er) card.

You hear /er/ in the word first. Teacher places this word under the ir card.

You hear /er/ in the word turn. Teacher places this word under the ur card.

Students will do the following activities:

  1. Skywrite. Say letter names and draw diacritical mark above the letter combination while saying the sound.
  2. Students trace over models of (er, ir, ur) and diacritical marks while saying letter names and sounds on page 19-19.
  3. Memory box.

Checking for Understanding: Students read word list and sentences from student practice sheet 19-23, 19-25, 19-27.

Sentence Dictation: 1. Did you put dirt in the pots? 2. The bird nest has eggs in it.

  1. Did that van splash mud on you?
