Job Summary: Under the direction of the Director of Volunteer and Community Service Programs at Lawrence University and the Fox Cities community, develop a deeper understanding of education issues, assets and challenges of educationalprogramming/outreach in the Fox Cities and potential campus-community partnerships. Serve in various different capacities at organizations devoted to educationand contribute to the mission of the organization, understand the root issues addressed by the organizations and make connections between the needs of the organizations and the interests of Lawrence students.

Summary of Essential Job Functions:

  • Serve as a liaison between the LU VCSC and the following organizations: Appleton Area School District and the Fox Valley Literacy Council.
  • Oversee the Volunteers in Tutoring at Lawrence (VITAL) Tutoring Program: Recruit Lawrence students to be tutors, work with parents to match Lawrence students with tutees, train all new volunteers, maintain a database tracking involvement and basic information for both tutors and tutees, maintain VITAL tutoring space in Mudd Library, manage VITAL budget through LUCCand participate as a VITAL tutor.
  • Support (as needed) smaller VITAL programs at Roosevelt Middle School and Rotaract Math Tutoring Program (winter term).
  • Learn about Lawrentians’ current involvement and interest with education issues by identifying individual students and LUCC organizations and attending group meetings
  • Utilize cause marketing, guerrilla advertising strategies, as well as more traditional marketing strategies to engage other Lawrentians around education issues
  • Develop additional volunteer opportunities as available and act as an incubator of new ideas for volunteers
  • Seek to understand the root causes contributing to education issues through research and meetings with community experts
  • Recruit or retain a minimum of 40 Lawrentian volunteers to serve at organizations and support and recognize their efforts
  • Attend weekly on-campus training discussions around topics such as asset mapping, social change model, reciprocity, models of poverty, issue area presentations, etc.
  • Maintain administrative reports including: Service Corps timesheet, paperwork required of community agencies, logging volunteer hours in Voyager, etc.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Students eligible forfederal work strongly preferred
  • Have and maintain a 2.5 GPA and must be on campus all 3 terms of academic year 2016-2017
  • Must pass any background checks/ screenings required by organizations
  • Experience or qualities related to position
  • Passion and/or knowledge of education issues

Abilities Preferred: Time management skills, communication skills, organizational skills, volunteer experience, past VITAL experience and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a large number of organizations and individuals.
