Steps to Becoming Certified At Level 1

Theory + Technical + Practical = Level 1 Certification

Theory

Attend a Level 1 Theory Course – Now called - Introduction to Competition Part A

(may attend any time but before completing the practical component)

Course content: Planning, Role of the Coach, Sport Safety, Development of Skills, Growth and Development, Analysis of Skill, Physical Preparation

Technical

1.Must have passed the Preliminary Free Skate, Dance, Skating Skills tests plus one Junior Bronze test

2.Attend a Level 1 Phase 1 Course - CanSkate

Course content: Pre-course worksheet, On-ice skating assessment, small group interviews, professional coaching ethics, communication, teaching & learning, basic technique, sport system, music, CanSkate, evaluated on presentation (dress, punctuality, attitude, technical knowledge, communication skills) - Must complete the Phase 1 CanSkate Assignment successfully.

3.Complete a Level 1 Phase 2 Home Study - Introduction to Figure Skating

Workbook content: practical observation with an evaluator/judge, practical observation with a mentor coach, exercises on the STARSkate program, business of coaching, ethical coaching, and communication --

* A mentor coach at Level 1 Phase 2 is anyone certified at Level 1 with at least 5 five years of coaching experience.

4.Complete an approved First Aid course (may attend any time but before beginning the practical component)

5.Must have passed the Junior Bronze Free Skate, Dance, and Skating Skills tests

6.Attend a Level 1 Phase 3 Course - Figure Skating

Course content: Preliminary & junior bronze skating skills, free skate and dance (performance standards), rules, skill analysis, interpretive skating, pair skating, synchronized skating, music & choreography, ethics, HR management, physical preparation, talent id, interviews, mentoring session, practice teaching, review/follow-up of home study, written test

Practical

1.Must have completed the Level 1 Technical and Theory components, be first aid certified and be a registered Skate Canada professional coaching member

2.Complete 50 hours of coaching (minimum of 40 hours on-ice) at a Skate

Canada member club.

3. Submit three 15-minute video lessons at the primary STARSkate level.

Must select three different lessons from the following eight (8) categories:

Jump, Spin, Stroking, Skating Skills, Interpretive, Dance, Synchronized, Pairs

4.Complete and submit the Practical Coaching Record to your Section Course Administrator.

* All practical requirements must be completed, submitted, and marked (as necessary)within two years from the date of completion of the full Level 1 Technical - Phases 1, 2, and 3.

LEVEL 1 CERTIFIED!!
