1 GENERAL

1.1 SECTION INCLUDES

1.4 DEFINITIONS

1.4.1 Stains are available in a wide range of opacities from transparent stain that allow all the grain and texture to show to solid colors which mastic all the grain but allow the texture to show. The following terms are used to describe the different opacities.

1.4.1.1 Transparent.

1.4.1.2 Semi Transparent.

1.4.1.3 Semi Solid.

1.4.1.4 Solid Color.

1.4.2 Varnishes and clear coats are available in a wide range of sheens or glosses, as measured by a gloss meter from a 60 degree angle from vertical, as a percentage of the amount of light that is reflected. The following terms are used to describe the gloss of our products.

1.4.2.1 Flat: 10 - 20 Percent.

1.4.2.2 Satin / Low Lustre: 20 - 35 Percent.

1.4.2.3 Semi Gloss: 35 - 70 Percent.

1.4.2.4 Gloss: Over 70 Percent.

1.5 SUBMITTALS

1.5.1 Submit under provisions of Section 01300.

1.5.5 Samples: Submit three paper samples, 5 inches by 7 inches (127mm x 178mm) in size, illustrating selected colors for each color and system selected with specified coats cascaded.

1.5.6 Manufacturer's Instructions: Indicate special surface preparation procedures.

1.5.7 Maintenance Data: Submit data on cleaning, touch-up, and repair of painted and coated surfaces.

1.6 QUALITY ASSURANCE

1.6.1 Manufacturer Qualifications: All primary products specified in this section will be supplied by a single manufacturer with a minimum of ten (10) years experience.

1.6.2 Installer Qualifications: All products listed in this section are to be installed by a single installer with a minimum of five (5) years demonstrated experience in installing products of the same type and scope as specified.

** NOTE TO SPECIFIER ** Include a mock-up if the project size and/or quality warrant taking such a precaution. The following is one example of how a mock-up on a large project might be specified. When deciding on the extent of the mock-up, consider all the major different types of work on the project.

1.6.3 Mock-Up: Provide a mock-up for evaluation of surface preparation techniques and application workmanship.

1.6.3.1 Finish areas designated by Architect.

1.6.3.2 Do not proceed with remaining work until workmanship, color, and sheen are approved by Architect.

1.6.3.3 Refinish mock-up area as required to produce acceptable work.

1.7 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING

1.7.1 Store products in manufacturer's unopened packaging until ready for installation.

1.7.2 Store and dispose of solvent-based materials, and materials used with solvent-based materials, in accordance with requirements of local authorities having jurisdiction.

1.7.3 Disposal:

1.7.3.1 Never pour leftover coating down any sink or drain. Use up material on the job or seal can and store safely for future use.

1.7.3.2 Do not incinerate closed containers.

1.7.3.3 For specific disposal or recycle guidelines, contact the local waste management agency or district. Recycle whenever possible.

1.8 PROJECT CONDITIONS

1.8.1 Maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside manufacturer's absolute limits.

1.9 WARRANTY

1.9.1 At project closeout, provide to the Owner or owner's representative an executed copy of the Manufacturer's standard form outlining the terms and conditions of and any exclusions to their Limited Warranty against Manufacturing Defect.

1.10 EXTRA MATERIALS

1.10.1 At project closeout, supply the Owner or owner's representative one gallon of each product for touch-up purposes.

1.10.2 At project closeout, provide the color mixture name and code to the Owner or owner's representative for accurate future color matching.

2 PRODUCTS

2.2 LEED CRITERIA

2.2.1 All paints and coatings used must meet the VOC limits of Green Seal Standard GS-11:

2.2.1.1 Interior: 50 g/l VOC or less for Flats and 150 g/l VOC for Non Flats.

2.2.2 EQ CR4.2 Low Emitting Materials: 1 Credit - Paint.

2.3 MATERIALS - GENERAL

2.3.1 Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) Content:

2.3.1.1 Provide coatings that comply with the most stringent requirements specified in the following:

2.3.1.1.1 40 CFR 59, Subpart D--National Volatile Organic Compound Emission Standards for Architectural Coatings.

2.3.1.1.2 Determination of VOC Content: Testing and calculation in accordance with 40 CFR 59, Subpart D (EPA Method 24), exclusive of colorants added to a tint base and water added at project site; or other method acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction.

2.3.2 Compatibility: Provide materials that are compatible with one another and the substrates indicated under conditions of service and application, as demonstrated by manufacturer based on testing and field experience.

2.4 MIXING AND TINTING

2.4.1 Except where specifically noted in this section, all paint shall be ready-mixed and pre-tinted. Agitate all paint prior to and during application to ensure uniform color, gloss, and consistency.

2.4.2 Thinner addition shall not exceed manufacturer's printed recommendations. Do not use kerosene or other organic solvents to thin water-based paints.

2.4.3 Where paint is to be sprayed, thin according to manufacturer's current guidelines.

2.5 EXTERIOR WOOD
