Your name:
Your teacher’s name:
Date:

In this exercise you have a choice of four imaginative responses based on the short story The Necklace. Read through all the options and then choose one. Look at the suggestions to help you.

1Write a scene for the script

Imagine you have been asked to write an outline for a short film based on the life of Mme Loisel. Write one of the scenes for the script.

Suggestions:

  • Describe the setting, time of day. (INT means interior, EXT exterior)
  • Write the dialogue for at least two characters.
  • Set out your work as a script. Include the title, names of characters, dialogue and directions.
  • Note the use of capital letters (upper case) for the scene and names of the characters.

Sample text:

INT: A modest house in regional France Evening
M LOISEL
Mathilde, darling, I have a surprise for you.
MME LOISEL
She quickly dries her eyes and says in a small voice
Yes, my husband, what is it?
M LOISEL
He takes out a large, formal-looking envelope and hands it to her.
Look at this invitation. We have been invited to the ministry on Jan 18th.
MME LOISEL
What do you want me to do with this? How can I go?

2 Write an extra paragraph for the story

You could write about the response from Mme Loisel after her friend has told her about the necklace being fake.

Suggestions:

  • Use the same characters and make the response believable.
  • Write in the same style of the story so that it feels it belongs to the story.
  • Use appropriate tenses and spelling.

3Write a diary entry

One of the main characters in the story looks back over the events of his or her life.

You could choose your own example or use one of these:

  • Write your entry for Mme Loisel after she has met her friend again.
  • Write a log for M Loisel detailing the money he has earnt and repaid.
  • Write the journal entry for Mme Forestier after she had met her friend on the Champs-Elysses.

Include at least one three dimensional object with your diary entry. It could be something that you think that character would treasure because it has sentimental value. Explain your reasons for including it.

Suggestions:

  • For a diary entry you do not need to use formal language.
  • You can express the emotions you feel as that character.
  • The object could be a photograph, a receipt or an article of clothing.
  • Write at least half a page.

4Compose a film trailer storyboard

Imagine you have been asked to write an outline for a short film based on the life of Mme Loisel. Draw the storyboard. Include at least six screens.

Suggestions:

  • The storyboard should contain a quick sketch of what is on the screen.
  • Compose a short description to accompany each sketch, describing the sounds and any special effects.
