Staff Attorney Position

The Center for Justice seeks applicants for a full time staff attorney position to serve low income clients in the area of re-entry (expungements, legal financial obligations, drivers relicensing), landlord tenant law, and policy advocacy in the areas of criminal justice reform and police accountability. Staff attorney also coordinates a twice monthly legal clinic. Courtroom experience is a must. Applicant must be self-directed, willing to work occasionally after hours, able to coordinate with community advocates and clients on policy matters, and comfortable working with media and elected officials. We seek those who are fearless in their willingness to advocate for justice in our community.

Position may adjust depending upon applicant’s skills and community need.

Duties & Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Executive Director, the work of the staff attorney will include the following tasks:

  • Providing low income individuals and formerly incarcerated individuals with direct client services in re-entry, housing, and other matters.
  • Outreach and coordination to other advocacy organizations, legal/social service providers, school groups, and clients;
  • Organizing and participating in twice monthly walk-in legal clinic, including recruitment of volunteer attorneys;
  • Participating and advocating for change in the Spokane Regional Law and Justice Council and other local policy forum;
  • Discussing the work and mission of the Center with media and elected officials;
  • Providing assistance in fundraising activities support staff attorney position;
  • Providing supervision and/or legal oversight to Drivers Relicensing Director and other administrative staff; and
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Licensed in good standing with the Washington State Bar and at least 3 years of substantive legal experience.
  • Excellent research and writing skills and excellent professional judgment.
  • Commitment to racial justice and appreciation of diversity and difference.
  • Self-directed.
  • Ability to communicate with a variety of individuals – clients, media, elected officials, etc.
  • Well organized and detail oriented.
  • Ability to multi-task.
  • A demonstrated interest in civil rights and legal issues impacting the community.

Compensation

Salary is dependent upon experience. Excellent health care coverage for employee and uncovered family members. Generous leave package.
