Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

In today’s first reading, Samuel hears the Lord’s voice, but mistakes it for Eli’s. Fortunately, Eli is familiar enough with the ways of the Lord to help Samuel make his response.

As we seek the Lord, it is good to have someone like Eli who is familiar with the Lord’s voice. There are many voices that bid us “Follow this way,” and the Lord’s call is not always easy to discern. There are people, too, who would pretend to know the Lord and draw others to themselves rather than to God.

Eli could have taken advantage of Samuel’s naïveté and claimed it was he who had summoned Samuel. But Eli claims neither to be God nor to speak for God. Instead, he encourages Samuel to listen for himself.

WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?

Perhaps the most profound line in all of today’s readings is Jesus’ question of the two disciples who begin to follow him. “What are you looking for?” he asks plainly and directly.

Finding the Messiah was partly a matter of what one was looking for. If one lived with the expectation of the Messiah’s coming, there would be a certain alertness, a certain watchfulness to life, and a certain openness to God’s movements. The two disciples had followed John the Baptizer, but as soon as John pointed to Jesus, they were ready to follow him.

It has been said that what we find in life is pretty much what we have sought. “What are you looking for?” is a challenging question for each of us to ask of ourselves. Our honest answer to this question can reveal much about our faith and our values. Those who, like Andrew and the other disciple, are looking for the Messiah will find the Messiah, dwelling now, as then, among the people. “Come and see!”

Dear brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We begin this period of Ordinary Time with "the call." This is an important theme that appears numerous times in the Holy Scriptures. This Call is not on a phone or even spoken out loud, necessarily, and sometimes is very subtle and other times right in your face, so to speak. This call comes from God to each of us just as it did for Samuel in the temple and Simon Peter. God is offering us an opportunity to life. Our loving God calls us day and night, at work or school, or home or wherever we may be. It doesn't come just once but continually even after we believe we have answered. This great calling is for you and me to live more fully as the adoptive "chosen" children of God. God calls to every person in every place and through all time. With Samuel let us answer, "Speak Lord, your servant is listening."

In a short while we will begin working on our new pictorial directory. You will receive an announcement about this shortly over the phone. The directory is an opportunity to get that Family portrait for the living room wall, or for Grandma and Grandpa. It also helps the parish recognize and become familiar with all our members. Please take advantage of this opportunity. I have found that, for me, the directory is a way to get to know you parishioners and your faces not just your names.

Also we will be conducting a time and talent survey in the near future. Each of us as parishioners are responsible for and challenged to do the work of the Church at St. Michael's and St Francis Xavier. While financial support is important for the material side of this work, a sharing of your time and talent and committing to this sharing is as important if not more so. So prayerfully consider what God might be calling you to do for the glory of His name and the good of our parishes.

We parents may leave faith instruction to the professionals, forgetting that our example influences our children far more than a catechist who sees them just a few hours a week. Whatever our riches- money, leisure, education, a good mind, a strong body, a beautiful voice, or even temperament-these are given to us to build up the Body of Christ. Question of the Week

Ordinary Time

For a large part of the liturgical year, we devote ourselves to listening to the mystery of Christ in all its aspects unfolded as we seek God’s truth and understanding.

Theme: God calls us to follow Christ.

Step 1: Listen to the Word—As you hear this familiar story of Jesus calling his first disciples, what words or phrases strike you? What is in this reading that touches your heart?

Children: What can you do this week to show that you are a follower of Jesus?

Youth &Adult: Andrew seemed to know immediately that he should follow Jesus. Do you have the same sense of confidence in your faith in Jesus? What helps? What makes it hard?
