Terry Fox Walk-Thursday September 28th

Dear Parents,

Terry Fox is undoubtedly an inspirational and courageous Canadian hero. This year marks the 37thanniversary of his MARATHON OF HOPE. St. John Paul II will join thousands of other schools across the country in a “National School Run Day” on Thursday, September 28th. The event is designed to commemorate this outstanding individual and to raise funds for cancer research in Terry’s memory. It will also allow the students to learn about helping others and Terry Fox’s perseverance while simultaneously raising funds for a very worthy cause. As a sign of solidarity, we are asking students to wear red.

Fact: The Marathon of Hope, which began April 12, 1980, has raised more than 700 million dollars in Terry Fox’s name.

Every class at St. John Paul II from JK/SK to grade 8 will be participating in this event. On the morning of September 28th, the students will listen to a short liturgy over the PA system prior to the walk. Students will then, with the supervision of their teacher, walk the route below:

  1. East on Kingsridge
  2. South on Parkglen Drive
  3. West on Springdale Drive
  4. North on Postmaster Drive
  5. Right on the path just after Woodgate Drive and back to school.

A fundraising pledge sheet was sent home with each student. For the safety of our students, we encourage students to receive pledges from friends and family members only and discourage door to door soliciting. We trust students will realize the enormous impact that they will be making to the larger community by being involved in Terry’s dream of a world without cancer. Students are encouraged to request that the donation be given in the form of a cheque. Donations may also be made directly to a student online by going to and following the links under School Run Day. Tax receipts will be automatically issued for amounts of $20.00 or more. Please have your child bring back the completed pledge sheet and cheques to the school on the day of the event –THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28TH.

The St. John Paul II School community would like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support with this initiative.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Steer-Thackray

Terry Fox Organizer
