HSP3M0 Unit 1

Social Science Inquiry Model Project

What Do Teens Think? Designing & Administering a Survey

Students will work in pairs to complete and administer a survey, following the research guidelines provided. The group must design a social science survey directed at teens, administer it to a group of at least 20, and then compile and analyze the results in a written report.

Suggested topics (you have to determine the problem/question to be investigated):

·  Male vs. female participation in school club/activities

·  Impact of the net and social networking sites on academic performance

·  Teen attitudes towards their futures

·  Teen attitudes with respect to dating and marriage

·  A topic of your choice – subject to teacher approval!

Part A – Designing and Administering the Survey

1.  Purpose: be clear about the reasons for your survey (use the topics above to guide you).

2.  Hypothesis: what you believe to be the answer to your question (an educated guess). Offer an explanation for your hypothesis.

3.  Survey questions: there should be a variety of closed questions (multiple choice, t/f, ranking). You may need to include questions related to the age, sex or cultural background of your subjects to see if different respondents have different views. Surveys are to have 10 questions.

4.  Question approval: before administering your survey, all questions must be teacher-approved.

5.  Administering the survey: a minimum of 20 surveys are to be administered.

Part B – Organizing and Analyzing the Data

1.  Create graphs to show a visual representation of your data (line, pie, bar – your choice)

2.  Complete your analysis - look for trends and patterns in your results (male vs. female responses, the role age plays, etc). Write about your findings in 1-2 paragraphs

3.  Draw conclusions – comment on and offer explanations on the degree to which the data you collected supports or negates your hypothesis in 1-2 paragraphs.

Part C – Final Product

You MUST submit: your purpose, hypothesis, sample copy of survey, graphs which you have created, analysis of data, conclusion, completed self-evaluation and project rubric (please circle the levels you believe you deserve in pencil prior to submission).

Due Date: ______Survey Rubric

Names: ______Topic: ______

Criteria / Level 1 / Level 2 / Level 3 / Level 4 / Mark
Statement of purpose & hypothesis - application / Missing either purpose or hypothesis, unclear or difficult to understand / Includes purpose & hypothesis, unclear or awkwardly worded / Purpose & hypothesis included & clear / Purpose & hypothesis included, clear & interesting / /10
Preparation of survey questions – thinking / Does not contain minimum of required questions; questions irrelevant or unclear / Minimum number of questions included; some unclear and/or irrelevant / Minimum number of questions included; all are clear and relevant / Exceeds minimum number of questions; questions are clear, relevant and interesting / /10
Collection & presentation of data - application / Data is not presented clearly in visual format / Data is presented in visual format; some unclear / Data is presented in visual format; all clear / Data presented in a variety of visual formats; all clear / /5
Conclusion & explanations - thinking / Not clearly written and/or missing entirely. Almost no discussion of results present, with no reference to statistical information. Conclusion does not address suggestions for future research / Conclusion written but does not clearly address hypothesis. Discussion of results present, with minimal reference to statistical information. Conclusion speculates outside parameters of research. Suggestions for future research are not clearly stated. / Conclusion written and addresses hypothesis. Discussion of results present, with reference to statistical information. Conclusion nominally speculates. Suggestions for future research are stated and mostly consistent with findings. / Conclusion written clearly and directly addresses hypothesis. Clear, brief discussion of results with reference to statistical information. Conclusion limits itself to the parameters of the research and does not speculate. Suggestions for future research clearly stated. / /15
Individual contribution – includes use of time, organization, willingness to participate & follow-through - application / Unwilling to take on active role in assignment and/or uses time poorly; disorganized and/or does not follow through with responsibilities / Willing to take on role in assignment; however, disorganized, does not use time well; some follow through in completing responsibilities / Willing to take on active role; attempts to be organized, use time well and follow through with responsibilities, although not always successful / Goes above and beyond – takes initiative, highly organized, always follows through, helps other group member / /10

Survey Self-Evaluation (each person must complete one):

Name:

Tasks I was supposed to complete
Tasks I actually completed
How well I used my time?
(1 = poorly, 5 = above & beyond)
What I did well?
What I need to work on improving for next time?

“LOOK WHAT I CAN DO” CHECKLIST

Place a check mark next to all the things you can do in this section of the unit.

o  Talk about cause and effect

o  Choose information from books, articles, facts and CD ROMs to help me find out answers to my questions

o  Make two or more of the planning decisions when planning investigations

o  Make predictions based on scientific knowledge and understanding

o  Identify confidently the factors to be controlled or varied in a test

o  Record my results in a systematic way and present data as line graphs

o  Draw conclusions which are consistent with the evidence and relate them to my scientific knowledge and understanding

o  Use precise scientific vocabulary to explain theories, observations and conclusions
