MISSION

. The mission of the program was to develop a series of monthly activity nights where parents and students could interact as family units as well as realizing the necessity of the larger international community within the school

VISION

. The overall vision of the SMILES program was to positively affect student success through parental involvement in student education.

VALUES & CORE BELIEFS

Parents are a child’s first teachers and most influential role models throughout a child’s life

It is the responsibility of the school to provide Second Language families within the school community with as much support as possible without expectations of obtaining extra support for the school

(Providing a Service Based Program rather than a Gain Based Program)

PURPOSE

The reason for developing the program was the need to have all international parents actively engaged in their child’s education and the need to create a cohesiveness between home and school

GOALS

Find Ways to communicate more clearly with the international parents ,

Explore ways to make these parents feel more welcomed within the school,

Find ways to involve them not only with their own children but ways to validate their essential necessity within the school community were also explored.

STRATEGIES

. During the development stage of this process, a planning framework was designed (see exhibit 1). This included stating a vision for the program, listing the values and core beliefs of the committee, deciding upon a specific mission and purpose or reason for the program, as well as developing specific goals and strategies which would guide the program toward successful interaction between home and school communities
