The College was built in 1967 and opened as a CommercialSchool in 1969. The church provided funds while the local people gave the site. It was started to provide clerical training and employment for local girls, secondary school leavers who could not find places in other courses. It still caters for these girls, some of who are poor financially. There is no Government grant, but fees have been kept to a minimum and these girls help to raise the standard of living of their families when they get employment.

Over the years, the young girls joining the college have come from broken homes. A home where one or both parents have died, homes where parents have separated of have divorced or a parent who walked out of the family home without ever coming back.
Pitman’s Examinations were taken in the beginning but from 1972 students have taken the Kenya National Examinations Council Examinations. In spite of their entrance qualifications, which are an Aggregate minimum of D and D in English, (these results are too low for the secretarial course) the ladies have continued to do exceptionally well by passing the KNEC Examinations and finding employment in Government Ministries, Banks and Private Companies, etc.
The College is currently offering a 2-year Secretarial Course. Subjects offered include Business English, Shorthand, Commerce, Office Practice, Secretarial Duties, Office Management, Accounts, Typewriting and Computer. Some of the students are from around the college and some are from some distance away and they board in nearby hostels, whose owners liaise with the college administration as regards rules – high discipline and good living standards. The College has seven staff members, two of who are Sisters of Mercy. There were seventy two students as at March with a class of twenty four who Graduated in March 2009. Future plans for the College include starting of an IT class which will hopefully be running by May 2009.

Computer Room
IT College in Sisters of Mercy Commercial College
We have fifteen computers set up in the Lab and five printers – We have used N-computing which is cost effective and has minimal maintenance. The power used by the N-computing allows seven users to each enjoy their own rich PC experience.
The computers will serve the people of Miguta and its surrounding areas. The aim of setting up the IT Class is to help the young people from around and beyond to be conversant with new technology. To give them knowledge on how to work with computers and hopefully make them marketable in the current business world. The course is open to both ladies and gentlemen. We are hoping that a number of young men will enroll for the course as a number of them are seen hanging around the roadside, idling around and some are hooked or are on the verge of being hooked into pushing drugs. Lack of instant employment has made them lead desperate lives and we feel the computer knowledge will even give them a chance to be self employed.

We intend that the students sit examinations from the Kenya National Examinations Council body. The packages to be offered include Introduction to computers and operating systems, Word processing, Spreadsheets, Desktop publishing, Database management systems and Introduction to Internet.
We wish to sincerely thank the Province and all benefactors who helped us to set up the IT class. May the Lord bless all your endeavours.
