SELF INSTALL HANDOUT

Windows 2000\Windows XP

A.  NETWORK CARD INSTALLATION

Install your network card (NIC) per the instructions in this handout, the computer owner’s manual or those supplied with the card. (It may be already installed; many newer computers and Macintosh’s generally have them installed)

CAUTION!

·  Watch for sharp edges inside your computer. Insure that the power cord is disconnected from the computer to prevent possible electrical shock.

1.  After the cover is removed, touch the case frame to eliminate any potential static electricity.

2.  Identify the expansion slot where you will install the Ethernet card and remove the slot plate from the back of your computer. Generally the plate is held in place by a small screw (usually a Phillips head). Save this screw. You can use it to mount your Ethernet card.

3.  Handling the card by its edges, carefully insert it into its expansion slot. Insure the card and the port slot are the same type of slot. Secure the card’s backing plate with the screw from step 2.

4.  Replace the cover and reconnect all of the cables to the machine.

5.  If the card is a Plug-n-Play card, (PnP) during your restart, Windows will go through the driver install routine where it will install software required to operate the card. (Your Operating System CD/disk may be needed here.) Windows may have its own driver or you can select the “have disk” option when asked and use the disk that came with your network card.

6.  If the card is not PnP, you will have to go to you “My computer” icon, then to the “Control Panel” folder, select “Add New Hardware”, and then allow Windows to look for the card. If it does not find the card automatically, then it allows you to manually select the network card from a list of hardware items. In either case it will go through an install process for the driver software. If Windows does not have a driver, you will have to install your factory driver software using the “have disk” option and the disks that came with the card.

After card installation, shutdown and restart the machine (Windows will probably ask you to do so). Right click your mouse on “My Computer” and then select “Manage” by left clicking; then left click the “Device Manager” listing found under the “System Tools” listing.

You should now have a window listing all the hardware devices installed on your PC. Look for an icon that resembles the network card. When you find it, double (left) click it to see if the name of your card comes up and that there are no yellow exclamation points on the icons indicating a hardware address conflict. If all appears okay, go to the next step. If not, contact the ResNet staff to help troubleshoot your problem.

Plug one end of your Ethernet cable into your network card and the other into the data port jack on your wall. Use port A or B as identified on your check-in form.

B. SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION

Your IP address was provided in your housing check-in packet. If you do not have this information you must go to the lab consultant desk 2nd floor Blackington Hall or the User Services Office, 238 Blackington. Your IP# should be a sequence of numbers similar to the following pattern: 123.456.789.123

Your IP# is your personal, unique, computer access number for the Pitt network and the Internet. It will identify your computer on the network and allow you access to all Internet services. Do not share this number with roommates or friends as only one computer at a time can use it for network access. If you have trouble getting on the network and get a message that you have an “IP conflict”, notify the ResNet office immediately.

Click the following in order:

·  Start

·  Settings(Windows 2000 and Windows XP Classic Menu mode only; Windows XP Standard Menu skip to next step)

·  Control Panel

·  Double-click on the Network Connections icon.

·  Right-click on the Local Area Connection icon for your network card, and select properties.

In the window that opens, you should see your network card/adapter listed in the Local Area Connection Properties box (below example). Select the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) entry and click on the “Properties” button (Windows XP looks very similar to Windows 2000; It is just dressed up a little bit and more colorful).

In this next box, be sure that “Use the following IP address” is checked. Once that box is checked, you can enter the IP address you were assigned. Be sure to use that IP address only and verify that you entered the number properly. Even a mistake of one number can cause you or another student to not be able to access the network. Also, be sure to enter the correct Subnet Mask and Default Gateway as shown below.

Once you have your IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway entered, click on the “Advanced” button to continue with the setup. Once you click the Advanced button, the next box that appears will have a number of tabs across the top. Click on the “DNS” tab and enter the information below.

·  Once you have input all the numbers and information, click OK on each of the dialog boxes. Your computer may need to be restarted for the changes to take effect.

·  Test your network by restarting the computer and trying your web browser.

If you have problems, double check your settings or put in a ResNet help ticket at the Computer Lab Consultant Desk, Blackington Hall (phone ext. 7160).

C. NETWORK CARD REGISTRATION

Your final step is to register your Ethernet card with the User Services Office.

To register your card you will need to obtain your Ethernet adapter address. (Also called the MAC, IEEE, hardware or adapter address).

Perform the following steps:

·  Open a DOS prompt window by clicking the Start button and select Run, type: cmd in the white “RUN” window, and click OK.

·  At the command prompt, type: ipconfig /all and press enter.

·  Locate the entry for your network card and find your MAC address, or Ethernet card address.

·  The MAC number is the 12 pair hexadecimal number (6 groups of 2). If there are no letters (letters A – F) in the address you probably do not have the right address! Also, be sure to choose the correct address for your network card. You may see entries for dial-up adapters, PPP, modems, etc. Ignore those and select only the entry for your computer’s network card\adapter. Record that MAC\Ethernet adapter address for the following steps.

·  Logon to the website http://studentservices.upj.pitt.edu/resnet .

·  Click on the 2nd link to go to the registration page.

·  Enter in your last name, 2P number from your Pitt photo ID, your PC’s IP address, and the MAC address from your PC and click submit.

·  The next page will ask you to verify your information. If it is correct, click OK and you are done.

·  If you have any problems registering your MAC address, contact the Computer Lab Help Desk at the number listed above and submit a ResNet help ticket.
