Seed Grant Research Program

2017 Application Instructions

Physician scientists are experiencing difficulty finding the resources to participate in basic science, applied, and clinical research. Consequently, fewer young physicians are choosing careers in research. To address this trend, the American Medical Association (AMA) Foundation is pleased to announce the Seed Grant Research Program. With a generous contribution from Genentech, Inc., the AMA Foundation Seed Grant Research Program supports medical students, physician residents, and fellows in conducting small research projects.

This program is open to both AMA and non-AMA members; AMA membership does not factor into the grant selection process.

Research Categories

Grants of up to $2,500 will be awarded to support research in the areas of cardiovascular/pulmonary diseases, HIV/AIDS, and pancreatic cancer. Grants of up to $5,000 will be awarded to support research in the area of neoplastic diseases.

Grant Timeline

·  The application deadline is January 6, 2017 at 5PM CST.

·  Recipients will be announced in March 2017.

·  The grant period is up to one year from the date of the grant check, therefore the proposed projects should occur between April 2017 and April 2018.

Project Eligibility

·  Funds should supplement new projects rather than sustain current ones.

·  Projects should be applicant-conceived, rather than part of ongoing research of a mentor or Principal Investigator.

·  Project designs should be clearly explained and supported by scientifically-sound methodology.

·  Research should not be associated with product development activities.

Restrictions

Seed grant funds cannot be used for salaries/stipends, indirect/administrative costs, hiring a consultant or contractor, general equipment (laptops, ipads, printers, etc.), or solely for travel.

Seed grants will not be awarded to any applicant who has previously received an AMA Foundation seed grant in the research category in which they are applying.

Applicants should be medical students, physicians residents, or fellows of an accredited US medical school and

US citizens or permanent residents.
