SCSD School Boardnames finalists for district’s next superintendent

The Santiam Canyon School District Board of Directors is pleased to announce that 3 finalists have been selected for further consideration to be the next Superintendent/Elementary Principal beginning July 1, 2013. The Board and a screening committee of13staff and community members thoroughly reviewedthe superintendent applications and the Board along with several screeners conducted initial interviews with several candidates. Three finalists were selected and they are:

Steve Boynton

Currently, Boynton is the Superintendentfor Arlington School District in Arlington, Oregon, a district of 150 students where he has served since 2010. Previously, he servedas Assistant Principal and Athletic Director for4 years atMolalla River SD and for 1 year as Dean of Students at Buena Vista School District in Buena Vista, Colorado. His teaching experience includes social sciences and as a basketball coach. Boynton also served as Assistant Basketball Coach at Pacific University in Forest Grove for one year. He has a Masters of Arts in Teaching fromWestern Oregon University and is working on his doctoral degree in education leadership from Walden University. In 2009 he was named Athletic Director of the year and while at Arlington was chosen as an Exceptional Educator by Renaissance Learning Group.

Todd Miller

Miller iscurrently the Executive Director for Oregon Connections Academy, an online school serving approximately 3,400 students associated with Scio School District in Scio, Oregon. He has been Executive Director since 2011. Before working at Oregon Connections Academy, he was the Principal at Gates Elementary School for 1 year and Vice Principal at Mill City Middle School for 4 years, both in the Santiam Canyon SD. He also serves as a Trainer for the Ford Family Foundation Leadership Program. His teaching experience is in special education. Miller has a Master of Science degree in Special Education from Western Oregon University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science from the University of Oregon. In 2013 he was named National Leader of the Year for Connections Academy.

Kim Spacek

For the last 5 years Spacek has been Superintendent and Elementary Principal for Pomeroy School District. The district has 306 students and is located in Pomeroy, Washington. Previously, he served as Principal of the Jr. /Sr. High School also at Pomeroy for 8 years. His other positions include serving as a trainer for the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership and also Director of Career & Technical Education at Pomeroy. Before becoming an administrator, Spacek was an Industrial Education and Math teacher for 14 years. During his time as Principal at Pomeroy Elementary, the school was designated a Washington Exemplary School. When at Pomeroy High School, the school was designated a Washington School of Distinction. Spacek has a Masters of Education degree in Principal Administration from Eastern Washington University; a Masters of Education degree in Industrial Education from the University of Idaho; and is currently pursuing a Doctorate of Education degree in Educational Leadership from Washington State University

Two of the finalist candidates (Boynton and Miller) will be in the district on Tuesday, April 30th to meet with staff and tour the schools. The other finalist (Spacek) will be in the district on Wednesday, May 1st for similar activities. The public will have a chance to meet the candidates at the end of each day. The School board will also conduct a 2nd interview with each of the finalists in executive session to finish the day. The board expects to announce the next steps in the superintendent search soon.
