BACKGROUND

The SLAC SULI program is an 8 week summer internship at the laboratory for ~22 students. It consists of:

  • Work experience in a research-related assignment
  • Lecture series
  • Tours of SLAC and probably some neighboring Labs

PARTICIPANTS

Twenty two students were selected from a large pool of applicants. The students are from diverse institutions and backgrounds. The participants have majors in the areas of science, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

MEETING YOUR STUDENT

SULI Students will meet their mentor(s) on Tues. June 22at about 12:30 for lunch after the morning lectures in front of ROB. If you cannot be there, please arrange for a colleague to substitute. After lunch please take your student to his/her work area and spend the afternoon introducing her/him to their project. Your student will have taken the GERT training and have a SLAC ID.

RESPONSIBILITIES PRIOR TO PROGRAM START

  1. Office/desk space and computer access should be arranged for students. Shannon Ferguson has set up System ID numbers for all the students, and will be arranging for Windows and Unix accounts for the students (they should get their accounts Tues. morning 6/22). Please let us know any particular computing needs.
  2. Contact students by email prior to their arrival to introduce yourself and describe the student’s project.
  3. Review safety training requirements for students and communicate any additional needs to us (beyond standard ES&H, SON and general Electrical which is already being arranged for.)

FIRST WEEK 6/21 – 6/25

LECTURE SERIES : After the first week, there will be one or two lectures per week. Lectures will usually be Tuesday and or Thurs from 4:00 – 5:15 pm at a SLAC conference room. Topics include high energy physics, photon science, astrophysics, accelerator physics, and general talks on other science and engineering topics.
