SAN DIEGO THANKSGIVING DIXIELAND JAZZ FESTIVAL

November 21-25, 2012

Dear Festival Volunteers:

The 33rdAnnual San Diego Thanksgiving Dixieland Jazz Festival is not far off, and as always, we need volunteers! If you know of others who may be interested in volunteering, but have not done so in the past, please, give them one of the volunteer applications enclosed. Feel free to make copies or call us at the Festival office at (619) 297-5277 if you would like us to send an application to someone you know. The application will also be available to print from our website at

We will need volunteers in all of the usual positions (see list). Wednesday and Thursday shifts will be two or three hours long; the usual shifts on Friday, Saturday and Sunday are four hours, but some will be shorter as we work around the band schedule. Cab managers usually work five hours and the host/hostess jobs depend on the band schedule. Please note the Festival hours on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

You will receive a one-day badge for each shift worked to be used for the day you volunteer (one shift per day). You may work as many days as you wish depending upon availability of positions. If you choose to work Wednesday through Sunday, Thursday through Sunday or Friday through Sunday, you will be given a special badge (white button) with your name on it – these MUST be returned at the end of your shift on Sunday as we cannot replace them. Please, rememberthe volunteer vests are to be worn only while you are working and must be turned in at the end of each shift.

AFCDJS members who have their applications in by Sept. 23when we begin scheduling will be considered first. [Once again, we are making an appeal to those of you who are not members to consider supporting America’s Finest City Dixieland Jazz Society by joining it. One can join AFCDJS on our web site.] Others are assigned next on a first-come, first-served basis. Please be flexible - we cannot give everyone his or her first choice but we try to accommodate your preferences as much as possible. Adequate staffing of the venues and booths is our FIRST priority.

Read the enclosed application carefully. We count on you to be there for your assignment. PLEASE, do not volunteer unless you are certain you will be available to fulfill your assignment!

Wewill have a pre-festival orientation meeting on Sunday, November 18, at 2:00 p.m. The location of the meeting and parking information will be provided with your volunteer assignment. All volunteers are welcome and we especially encourage new volunteers to attend.

Thank you for your help! We look forward to seeing all of you again.

Cordially,

The AFCDJS Volunteer Committee

List of potential assignments and application below.

Volunteer Assignments

All of these volunteer positions are significant in making the festival run smoothly. We hope each volunteer will select 2 or 3 of these areas, so we have enough personnel for all assignments.

Remember, the assignments are usually 4 hours and during the rest of the day, volunteers are welcome to enjoy the music in all venues.

  1. Door Monitor –Door monitors are assigned to the music venues under the direction of the Cab Managers. They ensure that attendees have the proper badges and help maintain the atmosphere of the venue.
  1. Volunteer Check-in—Those volunteers assigned to volunteer check-in will work in Royal Palm 1 with the volunteer coordinators. Some will help to check the vests in and out while others will greet and sign-in the volunteers as they arrive for the day.
  1. Information Center—Volunteers working in the information center will be working with Joan and Ed Adams. They have detailed materials to assist you when helping our festival guests. ‘Lost and Found’ is located at the information center, too.
  1. Badge Sales—Volunteers helping with badge sales will be assigned to sell badges or staff the ‘will call’ area throughout the festival
  1. Membership Table—Volunteers working at the Society Table will work with Jean Nielson. Jean handles new AFCDJS memberships and oversees the festival survey and drawing during the festival.
  1. Instrument Storage—Workers in this area check in and out the musical instruments for over 200 musicians during the event.
  1. Band Hospitality Room—Volunteers in the Hospitality Room will work with Barbara Moore. They will be responsible for monitoring the door and seeing that the tables look nice.
