I. Directions: Please correct the following sentences:

II. Types of Sentences:

Types of Sentences:

A.  Simple Sentence:

·  An independent clause

·  Has one subject and one verb

Ex: Romeo is romantic young man.

B.  Compound:

·  Contains two or more independent clauses.

·  Joined by a conjunction (and, for, nor, but, or, yet, so)

Ex: Romeo is a young man and he is in love with Juliet.

Ex: Rosaline did not return Romeo’s affection, so he went to Capulet’s party.

C.  Complex Sentences:

·  One independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

Ex: Because Juliet and Romeo fall in love, they decide to marry.

D.  Compound – Complex:

·  Has at least two independent clauses and at least one dependent clause.

·  Good type of sentence to use for your thesis statement.

Ex: Because Romeo is too young to understand the significance of love, he falls in love with every girl he encounters and misinterprets sexual attraction for love.

Fragments Sentence:

·  Does not contain either a subject or a verb.

·  Dependent clause

Ex: Because Holden did not pass all of his classes.

Run-on Sentence/comma splice:

·  When an independent clause gives an order or directive based on what was said in the prior independent clause:

Ex: The book is pretty long, you should start reading this weekend.

·  When two independent clauses are connected by a transitional expression (conjunctive adverb) such as however, moreover, nevertheless, furthermore, also.

Ex: Romeo does not believe in violence, however, he kills Tybalt.

·  When the second of two independent clauses contains a pronoun that connects it to the first independent clause.

Ex: Juliet it very naïve, she should think twice before falling in love.
