KS4 ICT: This worksheet accompanies slide 12 of the presentation Graphics.

Aim: To help students to think about the purpose and positive and negative aspects of different web graphics.

Materials: Students will require:

Method: Students need to complete the questions as detailed below. Suggested answers are included in red. Obviously there will be variation between the answers given and the students’ answers, but any answer which has been based on valid reasoning should be accepted.

To help users direct themselves to relevant parts of the website and to attract users to look at the different sections.

Question 3) Do you think this graphic is suitable for its purpose? Give a reason for your answer.

Yes, very bold and colourful, clearly sets out the various different sections of the website for ease of use.

Question 4) Give one positive and one negative aspect of this graphic.

Positive– Good use of photos, attractive and exciting.

Negative – Images may take a while to download; the text is quite small and in a formal serif font.

A navigation button

Question 6) What is its purpose?

Helps move users to various locations throughout the website, specifically in this case the home page.

Question 7) Do you think this graphic is suitable for its purpose? Give a reason for your answer?

Yes. It is a clear icon that would be understandable by any web user, no matter what language they spoke.

Question 8) Give one positive and one negative aspect of this graphic.

Positive – Clear icon, not reliant on text.

Negative – May not be suitable for novice web users who do not understand terms like ‘home page’.

To advertise a CD.

Yes. It clearly states the product and price.

Positive – Attractive logo, bold and clear text.

Negative – Inconsistent font sizes, styles and font types used.
