Guidelines for Author Submission:

Preparation of Article

1. TSQ Contributor Form. Authors must complete a TSQ Contributor Form in order to be considered for publication.

2. Column Selection. Authors should identify their column of choice for publication. Each column has a particular audience and focus within the mental health community. The following summation offers a snapshot of each column to aid authors in their selection:

Off the Record: Insights for the Clinical Supervisor

Off the Record speaks to the professional practice of clinical supervision and education. This column encourages reflective thoughts and shared practical experiences from the supervisor’s perspective related to the nature of clinical supervision. Generating new ideas and insights about clinical supervision, Off the Record is a lens through which to understand the supervisor’s world.

Dusk to Dawn: Gradually visible trends in counseling and psychology

This column is an exploration and conversation about future trends that are currently emerging in the field of counseling and psychology. Every major theory, technique and intervention had to begin somewhere. This column focuses on the birth and early development of ideas that have the potential of shaping our field.

Behind the Curtain

Behind the Curtain is an examination of the therapist, the professional role and the observed therapeutic process. This column values the varying shades of therapy and how each moment with the client is an extension of the therapist into a productive role. This column explores the experiential world through reflective thoughts from the counselor's couch that speak to the heart of practice

Hushed Tones

The purpose of this column is to spark ideas and dialog between therapists about self-care. As therapists, we mainly focus on others. Graduate programs echo the importance of self-care, but too often counselors forget to take care of themselves. This column allows colleagues to reflect on their own priorities around self-care and further prompts the “self-caring environment.”

3. APA Style. APA style is required; however no title page or abstract is required. Please note that Third Person writing is expected with the exception of small inserts of First Person writing for experiential points.

4. References. References are accepted but not necessary for experiential pieces. References should follow the style detailed in the APA Publication Manual. Check all references for completeness, including year, volume number, and pages for journal citations. Make sure that all references mentioned in the text are listed in the reference section and vice versa and that the spelling of author names and years are consistent.

5. Word Limitation. Articles should be 500-1000 words excluding references. Submissions that exceed the word limit will be considered; however, Therapeutic Speakeasy Quarterly publishes articles that are intended to be short, interesting and helpful.

6. Note about TSQ Tone: Understanding the tone and presentation of the Speakeasy may be challenging since we encompass a very unique style.

While we are not an organization-sponsored research journal, we are also not a blog (despite our experiential and reflective nature). If we put these two identified styles on a continuum, we could not land on either side, but rather just shy of the middle. TSQ is slightly closer to a research journal with professional (APA style) writing, but still maintains reflective thought.

Another way to understand our tone is to examine writing style through this analogy. Imagine that texting and personal emails are sweatpants, while a Tier-1 Peer-reviewed Journal is a tuxedo (formal wear). The Speakeasy could be considered business casual.

The best way to understand our tone is to explore our previous issues (available on the website).

Authors are welcome to reach out with questions or concerns about tone when preparing an article for submission. Unlike most research journals, TSQ is committed to collaborative work with authors to offer feedback, guidance and mentorship.

Submission of Articles

Articles are to be submitted electronically (in one attachment) in Microsoft Word or Word-friendly format, then emailed to: . Full instructions and support are available on the website. Articles are reviewed by at least two editorial board members. The Editor makes final decisions regarding publication.

Authors submitting articles to the journal should not simultaneously submit them to another journal, nor should articles have been published elsewhere in substantially similar form or with substantially similar content.
