Job Title:Research Support Officer (Pre-Award)

Job Post:Based in Northumbria’s Grants and Contracts Team,you will provide a proactive customer-focussed support service to academic colleagues across a wide range of disciplines; preparing project costings for research grant applications;providing advice and guidance to academic staff on funding streams, and particular requirements of funders; and ensuring that all applications receive authorisation in accordance with the University’s procedures.

  1. Generic Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Support the Faculty or Service Management Team by coordinating and contributing to the provision of a professional support service through the delivery of customer focused outputs.
  • Organise, plan and prioritise own work activities, and the work of others where appropriate, to contribute to the achievement of Faculty or Service objectives and professional standards.

  1. Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice and guidance on developing a robust project budget, including preparing project costings (on a Full Economic Costing basis) for externally-funded grant applications.
  • To advise and guide academic and research staff on University procedures, research systems and research funding applications and provide training where necessary on external web based systems (Je-S, e-Gap etc)
  • To make decisions on the resolution of issues related to bids to ensure high quality research applications that meet with Funder guidelines, have appropriateauthorisation and are submitted on time.
  • To liaise with Facultiesand individual academic staff to explore their needs and adapt the service accordingly to ensure the quality of the service.
  • Maintain and provide an information service. This will include: sourcing, analysing, selecting, interpreting, recording, drafting and disseminating information from and to key stakeholders to inform them of key opportunities, developments and requirements.
  • Administer the University’s processes for authorising bids for external research funding, tracking and chasing progress, troubleshooting problems, setting up record systems, maintaining records and keeping all parties informed.
  • Record all grant application information, including costs and develop regular reports for Faculties, Research and Innovation Services and committees utilising the Agresso Award Management System
  • Work with faculty and service colleagues to ensure appropriate due diligence checks
  • To maintain and develop knowledge of the main funding streams of interest to the University
  • Contributingto the development of tools and training materials for both academic and support colleagues.
  • To undertake any other duties assigned by the Pre-Award Manager.

Location: Based at City Campus

Attendance Requirements: The post is full-time with a standard working week of 37 hours.
