The SecretCity of Burlington

Corsham, Wiltshire looks like an ordinary English town. But hidden underneath the streets of this quiet country town is a secret underground “city” called Burlington.Burlington was built in the 1950s, when people in the government were afraid of what would happen if there was a nuclear war1. Their solution was to build a huge underground bunker so the United Kingdom would have a safe mission control center for the government and its workers.
This site, which is about 90 miles (144 kilometers) from London, was chosen because there was already a system of caves in the area. Burlington“city” covers 35 acres, which is about the size of 26 American football fields. Some of the tunnels are so long that they have street signs like a real city.
Burlingtonwas built to protect important government workers against bombs, gas and radiation2. It is 100 feet (30 meters) under the surface of the Earth. Its walls are 100 feet thick and it has special doors that completely seal off the bunker from the outside world. The bunker had enough food and other supplies for 4,000 people to live and work there for three months. It had offices, a phone system, a hospital, cafeterias and even a pub. There were rooms for sleeping and public bathrooms with rows of sinks, toilets and showers. There were even rooms just for storing all kinds of supplies from tea sets to toilet paper. The bunker had generators to provide electricity and a “lake” to provide drinking water. There was also a television studio so government officials could speak and give information to people above the ground who had survived an attack.
For 50 years Burlington was ready for use, but luckily it was never needed. The boxes of canned food, the tea sets and the office equipment were never opened. The hospital and cafeterias were never used. The equipment was outdated by the 1980s, but the bunker was kept secret until 2004, when the government decided to sell it. It hasn’t been sold yet, but some possible buyers have suggested different ways it could be used for business or even for entertainment – as the biggest wine cellar3 in Europe, the biggest disco in the world, or even a 1950s style amusement park4!
