Friends Forever
They say elephants are friends forever. Of all the animals, elephants are known to have a special ability for friendship. They are sensitive, they take care of their sick, and they feel sad when an elephant friend dies. Recently, a group of elephants showed their sadness when a human friend died. Here is the story.
Lawrence Anthony worked to protect animals. In 1990, he started the Thula ThulaGame Reserve1on 5,000acres2 in South Africa. Thula Thula became a safe home for many different animals. In 1999, Anthony was asked to save a group of nine elephants. These elephants often escaped3 from the reserve they were in, and the local people were afraid of them. Anthony knew that if he didn’t take the elephants, they would be killed.
Anthony took the elephants, but their first night there, they broke through the electric fence and escaped. After they were caught and brought back, Anthony realized that they would try to escape again. If they did, they would be killed. So Anthony stood next to the fence and looked into the eyes of Nana (the leader of the group) and started talking to her. He explained that Thula Thula was a good place for the elephants to live. He promised that he would take good care of them. Nana just stood there. After several minutes of face-to-face contact between man and elephant, Nana moved away from the fence, and the elephants were quiet and calm.
Anthony kept his promise. He stayed close to their special area in the reserve. He fed them, talked to them and even sang to them. One day, Nana came up to the fence and touched Anthony with her trunk4. This showed him that the elephants thought of him as family. Later, the elephants were free to live anywhere in the Thula Thula Game Reserve and there was not much contact between Anthony and the elephants.
In 2012, Anthony died and somehow the elephants knew. They traveled for hours to come
to the end of the reserve near Anthony’s house and then stood there for two days. They
had come to say goodbye to Anthony. A friend of the family described the event saying,
“A man’s heart stops, and hundreds of elephants hearts are grieving5.” The elephants had not forgotten their true friend.
