Study Guide

History:

  • Volleyball was developed in 1895, by William G. Morgan at the YMCA in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
  • Volleyball is a blend of baseball, basketball, handball, and tennis.
  • Volleyball was introduced to the Olympic Games in 1964 in Tokyo.

Player Rotation:

Players rotate in a “Z”, or “Zig Zag” formation/

  • Position of players at the net:

NET------NET

LF(left front)CF(center front)RF(right front)

LM(left middle)CM(center middle)RM(right middle)

LB(left back)Back(back middle)RB(right back)

General Rules:

  • The object of the game is to put the ball over the net in such a way that the opposing team cannot return it.
  • Each team has three hits to put the ball over the net.
  • The ball is put into play by an “unassisted” serve. If the serve hits the net but falls into the opposing court, it IS good and should be played.
  • The volley continues until the ball hits the playing court, goes out of bounds, or the opposing team fails to return the ball properly (illegal hit, etc.).
  • When the receiving team wins the point, it gains the right to serve. This is known as “SIDE OUT” and the players on the serving team rotate positions.
  • When the serving team wins a point, the server continues to serve.
  • Each player should be in his or her own position before the ball is served.
  • Each player serves in turn and continues to serve until the point is lost (SIDE OUT).
  • The ball should be passed, set, and played over the net by the 3rd hit. Any ball struck on the 4th hit is automatically a “Dead Ball” and the point awarded to the opposing team.
  • During this rally, a player may NOT hit the ball two times consecutively. However, if two players strike the ball at the same time, either player IS eligible to play the ball a 2nd time.

Fouls:

  • A player holds or throws the ball.
  • The ball touches any part of the body other than the hands or forearms.
  • A player touches the net with any part of the body or hands, or reaches OVER the net.

Errors:

  • A player does not clearly hit the ball or allows the ball to come to rest on any part of the body. This is called a “CARRY”.
  • A player hits the ball out of the boundaries of the court.
  • A player touches the ball two times consecutively.
  • A player fails to make a good serve.

Penalty:

  • The penalty for fouls and errors committed is a point for the opposing team as well as control of the serve.

Scoring:

  • Games are played to 25 points but the winning team must be ahead by 2.
  • A point is scored with every serve. Either the serving team earns it and continues serving, or the receiving team earns the point AND the right to serve. This is known as “Side Out”.
