Queen Elizabeth II Scholars Program

The Queen Elizabeth II Scholars (QES) Program is an innovative program for students with an interest in palliative care. The Canadian Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Scholarships (QES) Program is managed through a unique partnership of Universities Canada, the Rideau Hall Foundation (RHF), Community Foundations of Canada (CFC) and Canadian universities. This program is made possible with financial support from the Government of Canada, provincial governments and the private sector.

Scholarships to University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada in association with The Hospice of Essex and Windsor County, Ontario, Canada

Scholarships will normally be for a period of 90 days. There is monies to cover flights, accommodation, transport, attendance at a relevant conference and/or other agreed learning activities related to palliative care. Scholars are expected to undertake a placement activity and a relevant master’s module at the University of Windsor

Requirements:

  1. Scholarsmust be :
  2. Enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral program in a health science or related field at the University of Keele.
  3. Enrolled in a Master’s or doctoral program in a health science or related field at the Douglas Macmillan Hospice
  4. Employed by the Donna Louise Children’s Hospice, Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire
  5. Employed by the Douglas MacMillan Hospice, Stoke-on-Trent
  6. All Scholars must:
  • Be UK citizens or permanent residents.
  • Be 35 years of age or under at the time of application.
  • Demonstrate English proficiency. Applicants whose native language is not English must submit certification of English proficiency (official TOEFL score or equivalent MELAB).
  • Provide the following documents prior to travel: a valid passport, VISA, police clearance, proof of up-to-date immunizations. If the candidate has a professional degree or designation, he/she must provide evidence of registration or license in his/her own province/country.
  • Complete the Pre-departure form at least four weeks prior to departure.
  • Complete the QES Pre-departure survey.
  • Attend a pre-departure orientation at the University of Windsor.
  • Be supervised by at least one faculty member who has teaching and/or research interest/expertise in palliative care.
  • Participate in community engagement activities.
  • Complete a QEW narrative report within 30 days of the end of the scholarship award.
  • Complete a QES follow-up survey one year after the scholarship.

Application Deadline

There are 4 scholarships available. It is anticipated that these will occur in Autumn 2016, Spring 2017, Autumn 2017, Spring 2018. Applications for the Autumn 2016 scholarship will close May 20th 2016. Scholarships are for a ninety day stay.

Application Process

All applications will be considered with a goal of achieving diversity among scholars (academic program, gender, geography and social). An interview process may be required. Selection of the candidate will be assessed based upon the quality of the following:

  1. Curriculum Vitae
  2. A letter of Intent that summarizes the candidate’s unique experiences and abilities in palliative care, his/her rationale for applying for the scholarship, learning goals associated with participating in the scholarship, proposed projects and/or activities while on exchange, and a dissemination plan upon return.
  3. Letters of Support – Two confidential and signed letters of support from referees who know the candidate sufficiently to comment on the following:
  4. Academic performance
  5. Intellectual ability
  6. Motivation for the proposed scholarship
