TheArea Competency Checklist is a required component of the Qualified Contractor Electrical Personnel Certification Checklist. The employee’s Supervisor (or designate) shall complete an Area Competency Checklist with each employee every two years. The purpose is to ensure employee’s have the basic knowledge to work safely in a prescribed area or specific job task.

Employees performing electrical work must be trained, not only in general electrical principles, butalso in safe work practices and testing procedures specific to worksite equipment, processes andtasks which they are required to perform. Understanding and application of these skills must bedemonstrated, reviewed and documented every two years. For purposes of this requirement, the termdemonstrated may include on the jobobservation, discussion and/ or testing.

1. Proper Grounding and Bonding installations
- Knowledge of the grounding and bonding practices, terminations and applications.
- Knowledge of the difference between a ground and a bond.
2. Terminating junction boxes.
- Grounding/bonding of boxes, backplanes, grounding terminal blocks.
- Terminating cables in junction boxes.
-Labelling standards for IOC.
3. Installingac/dc Motors
- Sizing for feed conductors.
- Terminating ac/dc motors (differing configurations for connections)
- Safely connecting/disconnecting capacitors
- Knowledge of different types of motors.
4. Knowledge of Starters/Breakers up to 4160 Volt
- Understand testing/racking units.
- Purpose and application of dc Control Power andpower to breaker closing circuitry.
- Knowledge of motor control center configuration and requirements for cable entry.
- Procedures for switching starters/breakers.
5. Maintain Buss Bar and Festooning Systems.
- Flat cable system.
- Buss bar and Shoe system. / 6. Installing Battery Electrical Systems.
- Switching
- UPS
- Storage
7. Installation of Electrical Infrastructure.
- Lighting
- Tethering overhead lighting.
- Installing Receptacles, Tray, heating
- testing/tagging Extension Cords and Portableelectrical Equipment.
8. Installation of Pressure System Switches
- Hydraulic - Water - Steam
- Pneumatic - Lube
9. Basic understanding of ac/dc Drive Units
- Knowledge of where the procedures are located
10. Demonstrate Safe Use of Area Specific Electrical Test Equipment.
- IOC Site approved list location
- Motor Testers
- Voltage testers.
- Measuring Amperage
11. Basic understanding of Instrumentation
- Application of Process Control Transmitters.
- Applications of Process Control Switches.(Level, Temperature, Pressure, Vacuum)
- Control Valves (pinch, v-ball).
- Output vs. input and PID control.

This Competency Checklist shall be kept on file with the employee’s supervisor and a copy forwarded to the group maintaining Cognibox to update records. (See email address below)

Notes: The person conducting the review needs to have good working knowledge of the equipment and systems within the employee’s area of responsibility. The employee’s supervisor must be the approving authority but may use a second approving authority to assist in the process.
