ProjectAnalyze a representative section of a documentary to examine relationships of images, words, sound effects, and music.Develop your ideas about what these do, for the segment and for the film as a whole.
Goals
a)Make a precise split-page script log
b)Write about the progressions and juxtapositions you find
c)Describe how these assist in the segment’s function to the overall film / 


Steps
a)Pick a visually inventive documentary that interests you, and write a 3-4 paragraph summary of its content and impact / 
b)Pick an approximately 5-minute section that contains challenging film language and that contributes markedly to the film’s development / 
d)Make a split-page script, precisely loggingsound in relationship to picture / 
e)Write about the function of picture editing you can see that is,
  1. Structural (builds the scene, directs our attention to significant detail)
  2. Relational (indicates parallel, contrast, symbol, etc)
  3. Conflictual (differences, oppositions, tensions, conflicting forces, etc)
  4. Jump cutting (elision of time or space)

f)Write about the function of any sound editing that you can show is,
  1. Sync (sound and picture seen together)
  2. Overlap (sound leading or trailing its accompanying picture)

Notes Don’t be afraid during analysis to work backward from a feeling. Often you’ll find it was triggered by a particular juxtaposition of images, sounds, or ideas. It’s important to recognize this, not hold on to notions about what’s right or wrong. Filmmakers rely on their hearts and minds to make their films, trusting that you’ll rely on yours.
