Before Reading
Vocabulary: Introduce the words and have the students fill out the vocabulary chart.
Sloppy, bloomer, signs, patience budded
Sight Words: thought, own, could
Activate/Build Prior Knowledge: What does it mean to bloom? Show the pictures of the two types of flowers and discuss which one has bloomed.
Are flowers the only things that can bloom? / Phonics/Mechanics: contractions – couldn’t, what’s, doesn’t, wasn’t
Introduce the contractions and then use the contraction cards to play Go Fish.

During Reading
Using appropriate Guided reading strategies, students will be reading at their own pace and teachers will be listening to students read, monitoring, giving feedback, taking anecdotal notes and running records.
BELOW IS A SCHEDULE FOR BREAKING UP THE BEFORE AND AFTER READING IDEAS:
Day One: Go over the vocabulary words and complete the vocabulary word and picture page.
Review sight words and contractions.
Do a picture walk of the story and discuss the characters in the story. Discuss Leo’s facial expressions.
Read the story and look for another meaning for blooming.
Day Two: Review the vocabulary and discuss the different meanings of bloom.
Play contraction memory game.
Re- read the story. Have the children think of a friend. Think of something their friend is good at and something that they are good at doing. Then think of something that they both can do well.
Day Three: As a group, create a Venn Diagram using bananas and apples. See teacher answer key for ideas. Have the students re-read the story. Have the student create a Venn Diagram about themselves and a friend

Discuss how Leo and his friends were similar and how they were different.
Have students complete their own Venn Diagram about themselves and a friend.
