Assignment #6

Satire: We’ve been exploring the idea of high comedy throughout our reading of this novel; now I want you to get specific.

Look at the novel as a whole, and analyze it in terms of satire. You may want to begin your presentation with a mini-lesson in satire, including whether P&P is a Horatian or Juvenalian satire. Which characters and behaviors does Austen mock? What satirical message is Austen sending the reader? Find passages in the text that support your response.

Hint: You may want to use William Hogarth’s satirical painting Marriage A-la-Mode 1: The Marriage Settlement as a visual reference for your presentation.

Assignment #7

Historical Perspective: Referto your DiYanni text for more details.

The ideas in Pride and Prejudice may have stemmed from the ideals promoted in the French Revolution: According to the view of University of London's Professor Isabel Armstrong, the novel is the story of how the French Revolution could have been avoided.

The marriage of the two Bennet girls to men far above their own social stature represents a shift in thinking for the nineteenth-century English audience. Without bloodshed or war, Austen's characters deny the old social code, and there are no tragic consequences (which is not to say that there is not unhappiness and social clashing in the novel). But the characters resolve their differences peacefully, bending their own positions to allow for the other person's point of view.
